so i was on my way to my girlfriends house in my 93 when i try to shift into 3rd and hear a rather large bang clunk clunk. the clutch was not up to par, well it sucked ... and after the clunks it still shifted smoothly , i pulled over and gear oil was everywhere, the tranny shifts just as well, the clutch is a bit easier to put in. so i am wonering would jsut putting more gear oil in fix my prob, or no

not a blown dif, well it still drove perfectly fine all the way home besides the metal on metal noise because of no gear oil, so i assume jsut a cracked seal, but can i jsut refil or do i need to replace?

Yeah, that same thing happened to me. I still drove it on quite a few two-hour round trips, and to work and back. In addition to a lot of local driving. For about a month after that same thing that happened to you had happened to me on the freeway. I parked it a while ago because my oil light started flashing at idle. I finally got to pull the engine three weeks ago, and I finally found the hole.

The little clip was hanging out of the hole like that when I first found the hole, so something definitely is loose in there, haha. You can see how big the hole actually is on the bottom pic. It's the black area just to the left of the speedometer hook up. There's a crack on the inside of the bell housing directly opposite of the hole, so something definitely shot outwards. The odd thing is, that it felt and drove perfectly fine, except for some odd noises in third gear, and a grinding first gear when I'd come to a stop. But I know it was all due to a very low fluid level, because the output seals were bad. I don't know crap about transmissions (or at least until I open up this tranny), but does this help anybody out as far as getting an idea as to what happened? If the diff. pin goes, doesn't that render the car immobile?

Not necessarily.

My '89 had a blown diff pin, and I was able to drive it for a few hundred miles. Except for the leak from the big hole in the tranny case, I would have never known it. It drove and shifted like normal.

But it's like a ticking time bomb, you never know when the grand finale will take place..

yeah, some guys drive thousands of miles with blown diffs others it blows in a few miles it all luck of the draw. If you have a hole in your case and all your fluid leaking out your diffs blown. If thats the case I do have a spare tranny complete in great shape although it is in pieces, I can sell you jsut the diff and case if thats all you need.

doesn't seem like it would be a seal...

Well, that blows. How can a differential be reinforced? Should I just search? I'll search...

Get ahold of Bizzy. She has done countless numbers of trannys.
