I was wondering if anybody had any ideas as to what an erratic idle and whining sound coming from the trunk area would be caused by. It only does this when the engine is warm and started up the first minute or so. After driving it idles like usual, at about 900 RPM. I was leaning towards the fuel pump but i guess it may be something else. Thanks.

Is the fuel pump's pitch steady? If so, it is probably okay. If the pump sounds strained or like it is gargling it is not long before you need a tow truck. How long since you fuel filter has been replaced?

Do you hear a low rumbling noise from the fuel tank? If so, it could be your fuel return line check valve not maintaining pressure in the fuel return line. This allows the fuel to depressurize and become fuel vapor. Hence the bubbles.

You described the sound perfectly. Its alot like a gargling sound. I can hear the sound clearly because I have the back seat taken out. About how much do you think it would run to have it replaced?

Thanks,

Matt.

Just had this done two weeks ago. Experienced similar symptoms that you described. Got it to a mechanic before having to wait on the dreaded tow! Got the pump for $90 and installed for $100. Charged two hours for the install. Wouldn't have minded doing the job myself but too busy with work to take the time. Shotimes.com has a good write up of installing the pump.

I haven't had mine done yet but I did get a good deal on one. I picked up tonight a Flotex brand (Carter is also highly recommended) for 59.99 + 5.99 for the strainer at Murrays. My mechanic is going to charge me $125 to put it in for me and will take a couple of hours to do. Plus I get a 15% discount cause he's the manager and I'm special!

Ford quoted me $185 for just the pump today...no way on earth I'm paying that!

My fuel pump has that high pitched whine/whir sound while the car is running. It doesn't want to start when I'm on a hill, and when it finally does start it has a very irregular idle for a minute or two. It also sounds very "grindy" when just the key is turned forward and it powers up. It's a sick sound, you'd know if you heard it. And when the car is on, you can hear it running, but it's not a good sound, very unsteady. All to be fixed by Saturday. Yeah!

My pump was working ok, but the car was hard to start on the first turn of the key because the check valve was broken on the pump and allowing fuel to drain back into the tank. I replaced it myself and now it starts great. My only problem is that I used a 255lph pump on a stock motor and my fuel pressure is way to high(44psi) at idle and actually goes down(36 psi) when revved. I think I am going to change it to a 155 or 190 lph pump. If a mechanic is doing it on a lift it should take no more than a half hour to change.
