Guys,

I'm kind of at wits end. The symptoms were not being able to back up while turning. The propane smell that was repaired as a axle seal replacement has been coming on strong. Tonight while backing up I left a nice trail of this foul smelling graphite like grease. So the dealer could never find anything, now there is no doubt. So a couple of questions:

1. What would this type of grease be used in? It's a dark gray, graphite/metallic like and smells strong like propane.

2. Would it be safe to drive the 22 miles to the dealer or would i be doing damage and just tow it?

Any help is always appreciated. You guys have helped a bunch! B0f272b99b4d8b52a876705541a96d2621b899553e54dafaed8711a39c064266

It's fairly thick, going to go out and take some underneath photos. Smells great outside, neighborhood should be happy it's 20 out and not 90 should keep smell localized until i degrease driveway.

I think you have a failure of a lubricated device with visual indicators. If the liquid is coming from the front I would concur it is likely the PTU. I have seen them grenade (crack in half) and not make noise to where something seems wrong.

If your under warranty, call the Customer Relationship Center and have it towed. Better be safe then to do more damage and get stranded half way there.

That's a quick look. I have the premium care to 125k miles, but thinking this would be covered outside of that. Man I was in there three times over last month for the smell. Once replaced axle seal, then put 4 new tires on, checked for smell and said all is good, last time in a week ago saying the smell is bad as it heats up and it shudders in reverse, again nothing found.

I'm at 48k I've heard others on here of Ford covering. Either way I should be ok, including tow and rental.

Powertrain warranty is 5 years 60k miles.
Ok then should be ok with that. All i know is i added on the whole premium care, I had that cover a new Triton v8 for me in my expy and would not go without these days with the amount of computer parts. I'll find out tomorrow how long they need it for then figure out rental. I'm going to have Geico tow it, they are quick and reliable on the whole process. Is there any benefit to calling in a tow via Ford?

Well she is in the shop, PTU will take 3-4 days to get here, maybe have her back by Friday. The last 4 RO for this car at this shop complained about the strong propane smell after driving for 20 mins. Could have been resolved a whole bunch earlier if the followed the SSM that is out on this.

My Ford focus rental will be fun for reverse donuts in the snow the next few days.
