Ok guys and gals

Here is my problem I do not have a SHO but I have a FWD 1995 Lincoln Continental with the 4.6L 32V V8 and it apparently has the same trans as the SHO the AX4N. Do the SHO's have the AX4N trans?

Now my question is what do you get done to the AX4N to make it take more power and the extra torque, not sure how well they work in the stock SHO's but in the Lincoln's they do not take the power:nut:, So I no that the SHO's make some serious power with turbos and superchargers do you guys and gals run the AX4N trans with performance mods or do you go with the 5 speeds??

If you do build the AX4N what is done to it and who would be good to rebuild them???

Help with this would be greatly appreciated!!!!:salute:

THANKS!!!!:thankyou:
Joel

mmmmmmm:dribble:

I've got to get one of my 3.98 trannies back together.

I think I've already checked this out and they are even a numerically lower ratio than the SHOs 3.77.

First of I want to begin buy saying THANKS!!!! for the info.

Now how do I get a hold of sho#7 ??

I called Doug Louis from ford specialists and found out it would cost me $2900 for a built AX4N and an additional $400 if I wanted a 3.99 gear and $1400 if I wanted a torque converter, Who makes the performance torque converter?? He also told me that the stock gear is 3.71 . He also told me he has never had one of these built trans go. Have any of you got these trans built for less??

I have seriously considered the SHO 5 speed swap and it would seriously raise some question at a car show LOL , I was taking to my friend that has owned a couple SHO's about the 5 speed swap and he told me I would have to mod the trans mounts?? But really would it be that hard??

How much power are some of you putting threw the 5 speeds and are they holding up??

I plan on modding the 4.6L 32V V8 and I know with minor mods these engines can make some serious power more than the car can handle, (heads, cobra cams, and some boost turbo), This is why I need to get a trans that will take the power!!

I think a FAST fwd Continental would just be cool (sleeper), the engine is a great starting point but the trans is the only problem with this project, the only part that has me concerned.

"He also told me he has never had one of these built trans go."

Good thing you werent standing next to him when he was saying this.. You would have got poked in the eye by his nose.

Several counts- Most memorable was the 02 convention when the track shut down because a certain red 96 blew up on the track. Oh then the following year during the convention a blue 95 also blew up. 1 guess at the owner of these.

in all fairness though both trans suck, and no matter who does what we are only as good as parts supplied.

I will let you know soon enough. He is building mine along with forcing air down the motor. Root style brother. I'll keep everyone posted. And its "Pinocchio" bud. :laugh_ti:

FPS can build a decent enough auto tranny, but to say that they are failure-proof is absurd.

A typical rebuild with all the usual upgrades including better wear parts is a good start, but it's the overlooked hard parts, especially the planetaries, which are often the source of accelerated failures with rebuilds.

Ideally, along with replacing all the wear parts and a rebuilt valve body with all the Sonnax updates, replacing any hard parts that are remotely close to being out of spec should help extend longevity. I suspect that shot-peening or cryo-treating some of the hard parts might help as well, but you are going to have a hard time finding a shop to do such a complex and detailed job for a reasonable amount of money.

Doug was interested in seeing how an AX4N would handle low end torque issues and walked me through how he rebuilds/upgrades transmissions if I agreed not to disclose any information on how he does what he does. I've honored our agreements.

I've already got 1 year and 10,000 miles on a car that may not be a dyno queen, but IS a torque monster. Punch the throttle at 20 mph and the tires just shred. This tranny, that I built absolutely at Doug's instruction, has held up exceptionally well. My stock tranny died in less than 200 miles with my M90 supercharger pushing the low end.
The things I did to this tranny would have NEVER occurred to me without Doug's prompting and upon review, I believe these mods are why this tranny has held together.

Anything built by a man has a chance for failure, as an Engineer I would never dispute that. But Doug's tranny is as good or better than any I've crossed paths with.
