Since I have it all apart, I took a picture of the crank and woodruff key, and thought that this would be a good time to check it for damage and make sure I install the damper and timing belt pulley properly.

How does that look?

To avoid crank cancer, all that has to happen is the crank pulley being tightened to spec? It's been about seven or eight years since it has been taken apart.

Looks fine to me. Doesn't look all boogered up at all. Probably about how mine looked on my 89. Tighten the crap back out of the crank bolt during re-assembly.

It looks fine. How does the timing sprocket key way look? And yes, making sure the crankbolt is good and tight will prevent it. I actually have a piece of my splash shield cut out so I can hit it with my impact whenever the tire is off....just to be safe.

The timing pulley and damper were both very snug when taking them off and putting them on. Virtually no lateral movement.

I've done like 200 ft-lbs on the crank with a little loc-tite after having crank cancer. Lasted for like 80k miles and some track days before the whole car got junk'd by the next owner 7 or so years later.
