When I slow down and come to a stop now, I can feel the tranny shift outta gear kinda hard at times. When I let off the accelerator while cruzin' you can feel it slow down right away, where before when I let off it, it would cruze at that speed for almost 20 seconds without losin' any speed. The cruse control still works fine and every shift is still firm and quick. It's also been goin into overdrive early at times and then jumpin' back out. I haven't had any problems with the overdrive issue since I've started to manually turn overdrive on and off. My new tranny rebuild only has about 20,000 miles on it and it shouldn't be doin' this. What might be goin on?!

Thats what happens when you constantly cruise at 100 MPH+. J/K. Is there a warranty on your tranny? There should still be. Take it back and tell them that it's malfuntioning, it still shoud be covered under that warranty.

It's amazing how so many people seem so eager to spend someone else's money! I'm sure we all would love to ship our cars down to Doug Lewis for service, new trannys, etc., but in the real world not everyone can afford that option!

Now, let's see if we can help this guy out! :)

You could be looking something as simple as the shift linkage needing adjustment, slightly more serious like a sticking shift solenoid, or more serious things like valve body restriction, pressure too high/low, forward clutch assembly damage, etc.

Have you checked the fluid level & condition? A next good step would be to drop the pan and look for any obvious bad news in there. If it's clean, it might just not require major work.

Do you have the Helms manual? It has a good step-by-step diagnostics & testing section for the tranny with all the various symptoms, possible causes, etc. While a lot of the electrical test routines require one of those multi-million-dollar Rotunda tranny testers, a lot of the simpler things can be done by anyone slightly competent with a ratchet set.

BTW, since your's is a custom tranny (I'm still trying to figure out what a "shift plate" in an AXOD-E/AX4S is...), the guy who did it might be just as interested as you in finding out what the problem is. You should try to get hold of him and see what he has to say.

What is really amazing is how his tranny's work. How you spend that amount ONCE and it NEVER breaks. Not even with my SUPERCHARGED engine. Now that is truly AMAZING.

Kidding aside, a story for the newbies.I purchased my 1993 SHO brand new and soon after I started to have transmission problems and this was when it was normally aspirated. I once believed that a couple of local tranny shops, a few nationwide shops or even the Ford Dealership could fix my tranny woes. I was very mistaken. I spent somewhere around 4k for their various "fixes" and "upgrades". When I post about Doug Lewis it is only to prevent folks from spending money at places that don't have a clue how to fix the ATX. I am just trying to get the word out that there is hope for your tranny and even though it is a steep up front cost, in the long run you won't have wasted money like I did.

As for spending his money, no thank you, I have trouble enough spending my own.

wink

As a new member I am wondering what does Doug Lewis to to a tranny?

I am having my tranny done at an independant shop.
He is installing a trango lubracation-calibration kit. I hope this works.

Without contacting DL I would like to know what he does to make his tranny so durable.

squint So would I before I dump $2200 into what some consider to be a "worthless" '93 ATX which BTW is going strong at 85k.But then again the SHO is not the one I drive like a hot rod.
