My '93 has 120,000 miles on it and I'm starting to get a first gear clunk after driving for an extended period. Rather than troubleshooting for this particular issue I think it's time for an overall rebuild. But where do I take it. Please advise as to a vendor in the SF/East Bay area of CA.

I would take it to Nick at BaySHO Performance in San Jose. Been working on these things forever

Try sending a message to Noslo to see what he thinks, he has a 93 ATX and his car has over 300K on his original tranny

On my last rebuild a couple of years ago, the tranny shop had trouble finding all the parts that were needed, he did find them but had to go out of state

If it is indeed in need of a rebuild you need to get a parts list to keep an eye on things. Some parts are hard to find

Late and erratic shifting can also be the vehicle speed sensor. A real PITA to replace it, it's up where you can't see or fit two hands, and it won't throw a code.
I would give it the full flush-aroo with a pan drop and new filter, also disconnecting a front cooler return line and again emptying the refilled pan into a bucket while idling in drive. Have three gallons of ATX handy.

Ron, I used Bob's Almaden Transmission here in San Jose for my ATX rebuilds. He knows the Taurus very well. Assuming he can still get the parts he should be able to do a rebuild for you. He's not a big fan of the Transgo shift kits as recommended by Doug Lewis of Ford Performance Specialists in Atlanta. Cost for an R&R and rebuild in the $2-3K range.
