Definitely not the best or easiest way without a lift, but you can use jack stands and well supported concrete blocks if you must.

I R&R's my 3.2/atx combo out the top twice. If I need to do it again, i'll probably go that way again.

The subframe does not have to come down. Like shotimer, some prefer to take out the top and some out the bottom, subframe and all. I find it easier out the bottom.

how long did it take the first time

The first time, I took my time taking things apart, bagging them, labeling them, and doing a lot of extra work....so it was several weeks.

The second time, I had the motor/tranny out of the car in a day (12 hour day) and reinstalled it the next day. I was working by myself.

Go out the bottom if your doing just a trans swap! If you go out the top you have to remove the motor as well. Why disconnect all the motor associated things if you don't have to. The way I do it is -disconnect front suspension from subframe, remove y-pipe, take out all the trans bolts, disconnect everything on trans, support engine (with a hoist or I just use a long bar to hold it up. Remove 4 main subframe bolts, 2 engine mount bolts, and 2 steering rack bolts. lower subframe and remove trans. Ive only done it twice and the second time it took me maybe 6 hours to have the trans out.
