I think i have a bad tooth or so. how hard is it just to change the flywheel only. without removing the whole trans and crap.

Next to impossible? It would have to at least come apart.. (motor/trans) to be able to get to the torque converter bolts, and then to the bolts holding the flywheel on. A lotta times the ones holding the flywheel like to come off with an impact.. and you can't do that with a transmission in the way. :)

Pull the starter, and get someone to turn the motor over for you, and you can watch the teeth go by and see if you have some bad teeth in there.

If you don't want to remove the transmission, just pull the engine.

One or the other has to come out to replace the flywheel, uhm, I mean flex plate.

And for everyone's edification in this thread, the ring gear CAN be removed from a flywheel but not so with an automatic's flexplate.

You saying you cant grind down the welds and flip it over?

:sun:

Well, I guess you could if you were a glutton for punishment, but a bad tooth on one side of the gear is still going to be bad on the other. If he has enough know-how to grind welds and re-weld correctly, he's smart enough to go get another flexplate.

it doesnt grind very often. is there enough room to get a tig in there to weld it up to grind and file it back to shape? not going to do it now but if it gets bad someday.
