Nothing in the SHOTimes FAQ; is there a consensus on the best fluid for a low-mileage ATX, not driven too hard? ('95) I'm having it serviced this week at my friendly ATX joint; I know he's going to tell me I'm wasting my money using synthetic. True?

I cannot answer your question about using Synthetic ATF because I have not used it.

What I have done with my '95 ATX w/60K miles is that I have changed the ATF fluid with Mobil ATF (non-synthetic) every 10K-12K miles and have replaced the tranny filter with the motorcraft.

I use to change it that often on my '86 Buick Century and the car's tranny lasted for 215K miles.

Synthetic ATF is not cheap about $8 per quart, but it will last 3-4 time the recommended fluid change time per the manual. Amsoil has a Synthetic ATF and will meet this or surpass it.

An other choice would be to add a bottle of Lubegard red to the transmission at the time of the fluid and filter change. A bottle is about $12 at NAPA. Per the Lubegard web site, pre 72 transmission fluid had spearm whale oil as an additive. the 1972 endangered speces act stopped the killing of the whales. Lubegard developed this additive thats works very well. I use it in all my auto transmissions and add 1 OZ per quart in the ATF in the Manual transmission, also. It can be added to synthetic ATF and get even better results, than just synthetic ATF alone.

Good Luck

Mike, I go to Metro Trans. in San Marcos, right off Grand Ave. and Rho. Santa Fe. They are straight people, no run-around. He will also do limited front end work, anything connected to the tranny, inc. SFBs, motor mounts and clutch. He wants $680 to change the clutch in my '90 which is about as cheap as I have found. I really don't want to drop it myself; too old to have a tranny on my chest on my back on the driveway.
