I have a 92' SHO and I recently had a new clutch installed. A chatter has emerged from the tranny and I thought it was the clutch but a trip to the clutch shop changed that.

The guy at the shop said that it was my tranny bearings going out. The tranny chatters in NEURTAL and it stops when the pedal is pushed in. He said the input shaft is walking around because of loose bearings.

Are these bearings obsolete?
How hard is it to replace them myself?
Do I need a new tranny?
Where can I get a used tranny?

Thanks in advance!

Hmm... Actually, that sounds more like a bad throwout bearing to me... Only one way to find out for sure though. Pull the tranny, mount a dial indicator to the casing somewhere, and place the tip of the dial indicator on the input shaft. Turn the shaft without making any hard jolts, and see if the dial indicator jumps. If it does, then you have some bearings which need replacing. Or if the input shaft bearings are really bad, you'll be able to grab the shaft and wiggle it around. The job isn't that hard from what I've seen, but it's time consuming. I've never done it though, all we have is automatic vehicles in our shop. You can purchse the bearings HERE

I had the same sound and it also went away by depressing the clutch when it was in nuetral. After I replaced the clutch with the complete kit, it went away. More and likely were you got your clutch job from, they didn't replace the TOB.

Keep in mind guys that it could also be gear rollover. I have it in mine and it is quite annoying. We had originally thought that it was chatter from my TOB, but upon removal of the tranny and TOB, we found that there were no problems with the TOB. We installed a new one and I still have the chatter. Just my experience, but check with the shop to make sure that they did replace the TOB.
