I tried taking my 14 SHO to dealer to get the PTU replaced as it smells up my garage but dealer said they didn't see any leaks so there was nothing they could do. It is a CPO.

I would make a stink(pun intended) or try another dealer. Ford is well aware what the smell means, I just had my PTU replaced under CPO warranty and when I called to make the appointment and the service rep asked why I wanted to bring the car in and without even knowing what kind of car yet after hearing because of the smell he asked is it AWD? I believe there is a TSB as well.

So i brought car to dealer for Smell and gave them the ssm and they said that they don't see anything in the system with that ssm number. Also said he can find anything online if he looked hard enough, as if i was lying.

Anyone have anymore info? I talked to 2 dealers and neither one knew anything about PTU smell issue. I even gave them the ssm number and they didn't find/have any info on it.

Print this out and give it to them.

The ssm may have been deactivated and reissued to include different build dates. If so, the number changed.

I'll give it a try. I gave the service manager the number and told him its a common issue and numerous information about it online and he said that he can find anything online if he looks hard enough and that if he looked hard enough he could even find where it says he's a millionaire. Tool...

Hold your horses. There are plenty of internet mechanics. If its customer pay, the dealership will spend your money. If it's not your money, they have to follow process to get reimbursed or they will get stuck with the bill.

The best thing I you can do is figure out how to consistently duplicate the odor and explain this to the dealership or bring it to them with the smell present. Preferably both.

You dont go to the dr telling him/hef what's wrong and how to fix.

I was trying to present him with the number after car was looked at to try and gather more info about it and that's when he immediately went into the internet deal. His customer service was terrible. I was the only customer there and it was hours before closing. The car always smells when I bring it there but with no leak, they won't fix.

That is disappointing then.

What's your drivetrain/powertrain warranty look like? Does CPO warranty travel or is it dealer specific?

You may have to travel and get the work done before you're on the hook.

I have the CPO to 100k and full Bumper to bumper for 12k/12months.

I did call another dealer but they didn't know anything off the smell and requsted I bring the car to look at it but would have to pay 125 if there was no leak. No leak, just nasty smell. That's why I haven't brought it there.

It doesn't have to leak. The smell should be enough. I would take mine anywhere where they understand the problem and the replacement aspect. Even if it's far, it beats the warranty clock running out and then the unit fails and being on the hook for it. Alot of service advisors are not helpful. they spend a good deal of their time deflecting dissatisfied customers as part of their job. Hit or miss with them.

My PTU grenaded at 50k mi while cruising on the highway @ 65mph. Was covered under warranty at that time. Otherwise would have cost $1,300.

Not sure if I should start a new post or revive this one so here goes.
2014 MKS 72,000 miles 3.5 EcoBoost AWD

I have the propane smell in the interior of the vehicle I thought it might be exhaust took to a mechanic. No exhaust issues found checked the driveway and near the rear of the car now see signs of fluid leaking. Oh, and I bought the car 2 weeks ago and can't easily afford a 2k fix right now. I attached a picture of the leak. Is this the dreaded PTU?

How does it get fixed and where do I take it?

Dealer? (I have an appointment in two days)

Or would most mechanics be able to handle this?
Since I have to drive it home from work and then back to the dealer is there a way to baby this? slow speeds? Avoid stop and go?

Thanks for your help I've got my fingers crossed.

Get under the car asap. If its propane most likely its PTU. Trust me i know just replaced mine. If your lucky the vent popped off. Easy fix, but means you definitely need new fluid. If your not lucky your PTU is letting go. Fluid change will give you a definitive answer, do it as soon as you can.

Check the rear diff as well. Easy access to that one. At least on the sho.

Or maintain every 10K for severe conditions/30k for normal conditions. 10K in one particular police fleet in the salt belt has worked to eliminate failure. Need insurance? Step up to higher quality fluid.

I agree Shodded.

Thanks for the reply. I dropped it off at the mechanic next door showed them the SSM listed in this thread. So far they have found a coolant leak and two areas where a rodent has been chewing on insulation one in the skid plate and one near the firewall on the passenger side.

The car spent a day at the dealership. They didn't even look at it till I said I was picking it up in 30 minutes ( I had a 9am appointment). Got there about 4pm. Asked the counter what they knew gave me a story about how busy they are etc. They were looking at it now and the seal on the ptu was bad. $1900 to swap it out might be able to get parts in a couple days. Then 1-2 days to do the repairs. I said gimme the car. They brought it around gave me the keys and I left. I didn't ask if they intended to charge me he didn't say they wanted to. Called around and found a mechanic 2 miles away that changed one out last week. $1600 will have the part today and would drop the car off at my house tomorrow since I would be out of town.

Smooth sailing from now on? Or what other issues should I be on the look out for?
