OK everyone( everyone with powertrain warranty still) . There is a new special service message regarding the ptu in our cars. If after driving 20-45 mins you get a "propane smell" in the cabin, and there are no external leaks.... Free new ptu and vent. No questions asked.
Your welcome.
Some new ones come with a drain plug some don't. Ask to drill your new one for a plug before its installed if it doesn't have one.

Thanks for the heads up!
What in the PTU would have an odor like that?
Anyone here experienced this smell?

PTU fluid coming out of the vent or leaking through the PTU-driveshaft or PTU-trans seal would create that smell.

I bet the Service dept will drive the **** out of the car to see if the service tech can smell it - I'm sure there will definitely be some questions before they do a major replacement like this.

Just had mine done....told the dealer that I had a propane smell in the cabin after a long drive (45 minutes or more) and sometimes a grinding sound under WOT from a stand still. They "troubleshot" the issue for a day and told me that they couldn't find anything so I provided the SSM # and the Service Manager looked it up. Long story short, they used the SSM to replace the PTU under warranty with no argument.

On reading it, it says "if no leaks or odor present, replace PTU" so does this amount to essentially being a recall?

As I have mentioned on other threads, mine was replaced at 86K. I took my '11 in to have the PTU fluid changed. The dealer told me it was leaking and they replaced it under the PTW. Probably easier to R&R than suck the fluid out. Plus they must get something for filing it under warranty.

I realized the "if no leaks and odor" is their poorly written way of covering what to do if there are no leaks and there IS an odor...

I'll apologize if this is listed somewhere in this thread that for some reason I can't access but what is the actual SSM # so I can talk to my service manager about the PTU?

Bringing back an old thread to life here - but wanted to thank the community for this info! I read it a long time ago and then forgot about it. Recently, my garage started smelling like natural gas, so bad in fact we called our local utilities company and they came right out. I know there isn't any natural gas lines or appliances in or near my garage but the smell was so strong I was worried there was a major leak "somewhere," and my house would explode! The technician came out and no leaks. Then about 5 frickin days later my "dumby light," (in my case) came on.......holy sh*t, it's my frickin PTU!!!
Makes even more sense bc I've been having some shifting issues also. Long story, short - car went to dealer and I'm getting a brand new PTU and they're doing some work on the tranny also! Lastly, thank goodness I bought the extended warranty also!

Started to notice the odor initially after WOT and that's increased in frequency and strength. Pulled the fill plug today and the odor quickly filled the garage. Then I noticed the case was wet as well and dropped the engine cover for a better look. Sure enough, it's leaking as well. Just turned 30-K on it.

Hoping they'll change it out entirely and wonder if they'd install the IP/PP unit with the drain plug if I ask. Can't imagine there's any real cost difference between the two.

So, does this mean that newer SHO's (like my '17), already have the newer/updated PTU?
I believe there were several revisions the last being 2016. I'm told by the mechanic servicing the police fleet here that the non-pp ones still fail .the PP cars are cooled have a lower failure rate according to his experience. That was one of the reasons I specifically wanted a pp car.

Or maintain every 10K for severe conditions/30k for normal conditions. 10K in one particular police fleet in the salt belt has worked to eliminate failure. Need insurance? Step up to higher quality fluid.
