In a couple of weeks I am going to replace the wires, intake gaskets and plug well seals, cam sensor, O2 sensors, and front main seal on my brother's SHO. We already did the plugs 1000 miles ago, so they should be fine. My question is, has anyone ever replaced the front mail oil seal?? I was curious if there's anything to watch out for or any other advice one could give me. Thanks for your time.

Its under the timing belt, and near the Crank Possition sensor.

Both of these items are wear items and suggested to be replaced ever 60K.

I would suggest replaceing those as well.

Yeah I know where the seal is and how to get to it... The timing belt and CPS were also just done not too long ago. Just wondering if there is anything to watch out for?

Doug -
Use a screw & drill into the seal itself (carefully) - don't drill too deep. A pair of pliers pulling on the screw will remove the seal nicely. A piece of PVC pipe will install the seal.
Make sure the seal is seated evenly & well.

That's about it.

To see if the front main seal is leaking, look under the crankshaft at the bottom tip of the lower timing belt cover. This is the drain port for the water from the water pump or the oil from the front main seal. There will be drips of oil from this point onthe timing belt cover if the seal is leaking.

I use Fred's method to remove the seal. It works quite well, but sometimes it tkaes a fott up on the subframe rail to pull the seal out. Use the National (Federal Mogul) 710220 seal since it was the OEM part.

Doug, if you want to see what's there before you open it up get in touch with Mark N. (drivinhard)? on this board. He sells a 60k video for $25 I think. Very good feedback on it. wink

I used one of the picks in my set(for the 60k) and was able to pull it off. Attack it from the inside diameter of the seal not the outside diameter.

Be careful when you press in the new seal that it is lined up correctly/ goes in evenly on all sides. I wasn't paying attention and I pinched the outer edge of the seal against the block and ripped it slightly. Had to run out and get another one. PITA.
