Well the front right spring on my 94 ATX has broken and I have been told that there may be a recall on these springs from Ford. Has anyone ever heard of such a recall? If so, that would be great but I'm not keeping my hopes up. Let me know if anyone can prove/disprove this.

Thanks,

Brett

I don't believe so. At least not for the spring itself. The springs do break and that's well known so they decided to bolt this catch/support up to the strut to keep the spring from hitting the tire and causing the blowout. Leave it to Ford to use a bandaid and not fix the real problem. Last fall I had to replace both springs up front, didn't notice they were broken until I went to do the struts. Slight setback there.

Thanks for your input! I did find the recall on the springs on the NHTSA website but as you stated it does not call for replacing the springs but rather installing a "spring catcher bracket" so when the spring fractures it doesn't blow the tire out. How comforting that Ford would rather install a catcher bracket instead of just fixing the damn spring design. Oh man, I'm getting angry...I think I'll go bitch to the local Ford dealer and see what happens.

Thanks again!

I could have sworn that when I got the recall in the mail that they would replace the spring if it broke. They put the bandaid in to catch the spring
so it wouldn't puncture the tire.

Any chance that you would still have this recall notice handy? I just went and talked with the Ford dealer and they said they were not aware of any recall on the front springs...not that that means anything though. Let me know if anyone has any firm information or has had this recall done to their car. Any help would be great because fixing front springs is really not in my budget right now.

Only the 93's were covered by 98M02 recall.

By the way, the wife's 98 Contour had to have almost the exact same recall done on it. It took the Ford dealer 4 tries to get it so that the front suspension worked without noises. They finally replaced the springs in the process.

Projectsho89's right, only the '93. They said they would replace the springs if they broke up until 12/01. But they would install the shield on all.
