The other week, i blew the pulley for the power steering and the water pump. I had no other way of getting to the car parts store, so i took the SHO, with no working water pump. It was less then 3 or 4 miles, and i kept my eye on the temp guage the entire time. Anyway, it got pretty warm, above the normal mark 2 or 3 times, so i shut it off and waited. The car seems to drive fine now. But.... Could these few bursts of heat damage anything? Could a short burst of heat like that burn the cats? Should i be worried?

Detonator,

If you did not take it into the RED for very long you may be OK. Your catalitic converters are the least of your worries. Again if you did not run in the red for more than a minute or two you should be alright. Stopping and letting it cool down was the right thing to do.

Watch your coolant level. If coolant starts to dissapear, and/or you can smell anti-freeze in the exaust, then do a compression test to check for a blown head gasket.

Do not go getting paranoid. Waite and see if you get any signs of a problem. Keep a check on your coolant and oil levels, more regularly than you normally do, for the next few weeks. You may be one lucky SOB. rangerj

My 89 ran hot like that on me on the trip home from my purchase of it at 189K miles.

At 211K miles, it shows no ill effects from its hot experience.

YMMV

Here's a good rule:

DO NOT, repeat, DO NOT operate the SHO engine with the coolant temperature above the NORMAL range. Doing so will risk warping the aluminum heads.

No taxis or public transportation? ****, I walk 3-4 miles every day, sometimes twice a day. I hope you didn't do any damage, but consider this a lesson learned...

Scott is correct. Not only with the SHO, but with almost every modern car on the road today. Even older street rods are restored with aluminum heads. Aluminum heads HATE heat. Nobody blows head gaskets anymore, they just warp the heads themselves.

Overheating Engine = SHO Boom! oh_my

2 weeks later and it still drives fine... Pulls nice and strong like it always did. Maybe you are right, i am one luckey SOB. I will keep you posted if the thing decides to explode within the next few weeks. And as for 'Detenator' (correct spelling detonator, but that was taken alreday on AIM) I like the sound of the word. Honest. I don't destroy that many cars now. hehe It just rolls off your toungue nicely. :D
