Hey guys was under the car during my fix it process and noticed a spot on the oil pan that looks like a bolt should go there but isnt one in there. I got a picture yes I know its filthy under there!

Well at least mine isn't the only one that has dirty crap on the bottom of the car. I'm not leaking any fluids that I can see but there's some type of fluid and sludge all over the bottom of the oil pan, tranny, and everywhere else under there.

yeah your missing a bolt. it goes through the oil pan and into the trans (obviously). there should be one on the other side. take it out and match it up. i dont think its that critical to the trans as there 4 (i think) other bolts holding the trans to the block. so it should be fine to drive. unless it has some hidden purpose?

Yes, you are missing a M10x1.5 bolt that's about 1.5" long with a 13mm head.

It is very not critical, as about 50% of the cars I work on are missing them from a previous clutch or tranny job.

EDIT: P.S. The oil goes on the INSIDE of the engine...

Don't feel bad. I'm missing several intake bolts. I even pulled my front bracket bolts out. It just makes disassembling that much quicker next time.

Ill take a better look at it tomorrow when i pull the motor mounts out. You remember how badly the engine rocked, Tom.

Yeah that would be whats left from a leaking power steering pump fixed now, leaking radiator, and a leaking axle seal, dumping the still half full radiator when i was pulling it out LOL.....Should be all fixed up in a few weeks!

Glad you're back !

Close - it's one of the two 13mm bolts through the oil pan to the bellhousing.

The bolt is M6 x 1.00mm x 12mm Hex ****** . . . .

N605-770-S2

The chances are good that the prior owner/mechanic lost/misplaced it, and said, "oh well, it's only one . . . ."

Nope. Thanks for playing. Please try again.

Yes, I know that it's one of the two bolts that go through the bottom of the oil pan to the bellhousing. I'll guarantee that it's an M10 bolt with a 13mm head. Guarantee. As mentioned, the length is approximately 1.5" or 40mm.

Your part number is incorrect, a. because it's an M6 bolt, and b. it's only 12mm (less than half of an inch) long.

Tsk. Tsk. :nono: :nono: :nono: You should know that "You Don't Mess With The SHO Man!"

Ahhhhhhh, it's like I never left! :salute:

You left?

Yep, Storm ... Wrong again. What the **** would an m6 be doing holding a trans to an engine block?

This is like when the math teacher asks a question and you punch away on your caclulator for a while and come up with an answer that can only be justified by saying..."that's what the calculator says, so that's my answer."

No. That's what the Ford parts database shows.

Then again, those images suck and we know they're completely 100-percent error free . . . !

And for the record, I am rarely wrong. But at least I admit when I am !

Oh well, it could be worse . . . .

Hmmm, the last 3 SHO's that I've owned were missing this bolt so apparently it isn't necessary...then again those SHO's were sent to a crusher wit REALLY big teeth so who know?!?!?!?

Is the dust shield still there between the engine and the transmission? (Thin metal sheet) Thats the only reason those bolts are there is to hold that up, but it's not really a critical part.

umm, no, it is not just there to hold the shield.

THESE BOLTS ARE IMPORTANT! Yes, many SHO's are driving around without one (or both) of them. But many SHO's are driving around with 10,000 mile oil, fram filters, leaking valve cover gaskets, dirty air filters, worn-out suspension, rusted subframes, etc, etc, etc, but that does not mean that it is something I want for my car. The oil pan is a STRESSED member of the drivetrain, it was designed that way.

You should replace that bolt when you get the chance.

I don't doubt in the least that Ford and other parts databases are fraught with errors, in fact I know it. :nut:

I just try not to "trump" someone else's otherwise seemingly accurate answer by "correcting" it with faulty information.

This is just a situation where personal experience has more value than what a book or computer says.

I (fairly, I think) took your reply as a "gotcha" jab, and got a chuckle out of it. I responded with similar acerbic humor, and corrected the error. No harm, no foul. I would be interested to know when I haven't corrected myself when I've been wrong about something... ;)

FWIW, I've misplaced mine a couple of years ago now, but if you can get the original 1995 microfiche parts catalog it is far, far more accurate.
