Every time I hit the defrost button, my engine
starts sounding really bad, the engine kicks down
and sounds like its struggling, and when out on the road the steering tightens up. I've also heard that it makes a noise too.

Sounds like it's more than an alternator problem. In my past experiences with an early alternator failure, the battery light would come on and go off constantly until the battery was not able to start the car. If your battery light comes on at any time, you better get an alternator all the way!

The A/C compressor engages when you select DEFROST. Does it also happen when you select AUTO or MAX A/C? If so, it's the compressor dragging the engine down. As to its health, that needs to be checked.

I was just going to say what Scott said...

Had a similar problem and it was due to a destroyed AC clutch. It is probably still there when you are drving and highway speeds, you just can't hear it.

your AC clutch is shot...make sure you get that taken care of, because mine caused further problems, such a fried AC pulley bearings...

Trust me (and Josh T.), not a fun thing to deal with...
