I believe the pulleys are the same on them (they run on the same width/groove belt, but different length between the ATX and MTX)...but they have different mounting points on them.

While the pulley may have the same width and number of ribs, I doubt that they are the same pulleys. There are differences between mtx alternator pulleys from 89-93.5, mid year 93+'s and 94-95. These pulleys are not interchangable (at least 89-93.5 and mid year+'s aren't.) Each pulley change coresponds to each alternator update/redesign.

Semantics though. :)

It won't work.

So would this be a 92 only part? Thanks.

No, you should be able to use any alternator (3.0 mtx) from 89-93.

The 93's alt was redesigned mid year but it is interchangable with any 89-93 unit. I went overboard explaining this earlier and made it more complicated. :)

What is wrong with your alternator? Have you looked around locally for a rebuilder? Check the yellow pages, do a google search for alternator or starter (or generator) rebuild + your zip code.

I just had mine done for $95. It probably would've been cheaper elsewhere but it was still cheaper than a reman. At least some of the remans have a lifetime warranty though...

Not really sure what is wrong with it, I just know it is not charging. The weather has been working against me lately...lol, to get a better look at it. Thanks , Herb :thumb:

would this alt. fit on a 92 mtx?
It is a 130 amp, would be a nice upgrade, if it will fit. Thanks, Herb.

Judging from the exterior appearance, it's not an 89-93 90a mtx alternator which is the only one that I can say with certainty that will fit a 92. What is it from?

It is from a parts wholesale place, it is listed for a 94-95 3.0 SHO. I missed the part about needing to be 89-93 to work. :bonk:

Yeah, that won't work without a lot of major work (unbolting the AC compressor/engine mount bracket, swapping it with the later version, using the 94-95 alt bracket, and finally rewiring the 3 wire 94-95 alternator to work with the 2 wire system). Someone on the forum posted a writeup on the wiring but I can't find it in my bookmarks.

I also had mine rebuilt for $95, what a coincidence! Anyway, the guy at the shop said my alternator had Japanese guts, so replacing that with similar Japanese parts would have only cost $65, but he strongly suggested the American guts, so I paid the extra money and every light on the car seems brighter than ever, and I feel better about the American parts in it! If intersted, the shop is called San Jose Generator, and the guy's name is Rod.

It's a Mitsubishi alternator so naturally everything inside of it is Japanese from the factory. As for replacement parts, they can be made by anyone but I don't have a preference for Japanese vs American parts. Everything in my car is brighter but that's because the voltage regulator went bad and wasn't putting out 14.4 volts. Now that it is, everything is operating as it should.

Rockauto sells voltage regulators for these alternators by the way. IIRC, they are about $50.
