What's better for performance? The porterized air intake or the K&N cone filter?

I've tried both and found that the Porterized intake is a little better. Many SHO'ers will tell you that the cone sound a HECK of a lot better and it DOES!!! I miss that sound. I kept getting the SES light when I had my cone under the hood and it bugged the crap out of me. I finally ended up putting the stock air box back in and actually felt a very slight gain in power. I would guess that it was because the car enjoyed not getting hot air from the engine.

SHOZ123 has an awesome setup with the cone in the front driver wheel-well and it seems to work well for him, I tried it but it never worked for me so I gave up. Now, I've got a setup that is working good for me and I've noticed a very, very slight increase in power, but it may just be my imagination. Here's my web address so that you can see what I did and see if you like it. Overall, trying different ideas on the intake is, in my opinion, one of the funnest things to do on the SHO, beside drive it, and you will never run out of good ideas from the people on SHOFORUM.com !!! Good Luck. thumbs_u

The Porterized will let better airflow in but its dirty air. The filter will be needed to be cleaned and oiled (lightly) much more often.

And before anyone disagrees.. go out remove you iner fender well and take the sound pad off of the well and shake it

I had my side markers off checking bulbs, and I could see right in to the saxacone/intake in the fender well. Anyone thought of putting a small scoop 1-3" where the driver side side marker light is? Or am I about a year behind on this idea?

I've always liked the idea of a scoop here. One problem I see with any direct air intake is rain water though. I had a enclosed cone filter under the hood with a 4" duct up to the front grill once.

The filter enclosure would get all wet and you wouldn't believe the stuff that got sucked up into the filter from off the road with the duct that close to the road surface.

Tim, you got me curious since I had not checked the K&N via the modified Porter system to the inner wheel well I have been using since I got the car and modified the intake and filter about 50K km ago, so I popped it out (it was due anyway). Almost no dirt in it at all. I was very surprised, since I drive a lot of dirt roads every summer at fairly good speeds every day. The pattern of dirt on the filter was very evident though, sort of a cone in the center, with the base at the top of the box was clean and the dirtier portions graded out from that the the outer edge, which had the most. So it seems that the particles must be slowing as they approach the filter, allowing them to move toward the outsides of the flow path. I suspect this is a higher pressure zone bounce created by the filter itself. But it was certainly interesting. And the very low level of dirt on the filter would not indicate that intake from the inner wheel well is all that dirty, or at least, not on my car.

What I want to know is how it got called a "Porterized" system. Does it have something to do with being a "Porterite"? wink

I think Herr Porter is rather into self promotion, actually. wink

The way I did mine really bears only a marginal resemblence to his, in that it goes from the air box to the inner wheel well, but I have tried to be polite by keeping his name associated with it since that seemed to be the thing to do from the V8SHO site. His was really more complicated than needed by far. Mine uses less parts, has less turns to cause turbulence in the airflow, and does not require shifting the location of the airbox. Occum's Razor works well in car stuff too. :)

My first intake mod before I was on any email list was to remove the saxacone and run a 3" duct hose up to the OEM box. Was very easy and some wide 3" tape connected the hose and the box together.

I got into the fenderwell area and yanked out the mousetrap and put it back together. I intentionally left the rubber grommet out that leads into the fenderwell, and plan on further enclosing the SHOSHOP air setup. Then I'm going to take my side marker, modify it somewhat and install a screen in it to keep bugs out. (I don't drive my car in the rain anyway, so I'm not worried about water.) I think a little creative PVC and flex fittings (I'm in the electrical contracting bus.) I'll have a RAM AIR SETUP.

Ram air tool Yeah, maybe at 180mph.

On the other side, I'm going to try the same thing with the marker, only directing the air over the engine itself for cooling.... We'll see. (What's in the other fenderwell?)

I LOVE THIS CAR (for no other reason that I'm learning more about automotives than I ever thought I'd want to know.)
