Tim, you got me curious since I had not checked the K&N via the modified Porter system to the inner wheel well I have been using since I got the car and modified the intake and filter about 50K km ago, so I popped it out (it was due anyway). Almost no dirt in it at all. I was very surprised, since I drive a lot of dirt roads every summer at fairly good speeds every day. The pattern of dirt on the filter was very evident though, sort of a cone in the center, with the base at the top of the box was clean and the dirtier portions graded out from that the the outer edge, which had the most. So it seems that the particles must be slowing as they approach the filter, allowing them to move toward the outsides of the flow path. I suspect this is a higher pressure zone bounce created by the filter itself. But it was certainly interesting. And the very low level of dirt on the filter would not indicate that intake from the inner wheel well is all that dirty, or at least, not on my car.
