I thought I would share some information with a fix to my air bag system that is now working properly on my Sable Wagon (93 ATX system.)
Last Fall my air bag light was flashing a 34, 35 code. The Ford manual states a short in the drivers air bag and the passenger air bag. I let it go for a while and was planning to disconnect the battery and restart the system with the hope it would disappear. Well of course it did'nt. After a few weeks the code changed to a 51 and only flashing a 51, the other codes were not flashing. I think the air bag module ( blue box next to the glove box ) after a period of time of not being fixed or reset goes into a 51 code.
I recently purchased a used clock spring and an air bag module from the same year car. Earlier years have different connectors to the air bags. I disconnected the battery and installed the components, attached the battery and went through the EEC (computer learing proceedure) and it is presently working properly.
I suggest if you have a similar problem, purchase a used module for the same year car and ask if the air bags were deployed. If the bags were blown the module may not work and have a open circuit.
