THREAD HIJACK ALERT!!!!!

Here in Iowa they amended the law, the tickets being issued by speed cameras are classified as a civil infraction and the cities have a much lower burden of proof (and this has already gone up to the state supreme court and been upheld). The good side of that is the "ticket" does not show on your driving record, so no impact to insurance. They are quite pricey however, and thats all it is, a revenue stream for the municipality.

We have RED LIGHT CAMERAS in Naples, and in other parts of FL. State got greedy and established a $155. ticket price plus they got like 70%. Like 90% of the tickets were the right turn on red. People either sort stopped (illegal) or didn't stop at the BIG white line, which in some instances was 30 ft back, but NEVER in the same place. One lady had six violations before she got her first ticket in the mail (certified). Got to watch a friend's video/stills that were sent to him from Johnny Law where he got his ticket going from one 6 lane road to another, at 11 PM and absolutely NO other traffic around!! Public dissent got those turned off after about 6 months!

Still on(thankfully) for those turning left who aimlessly follow 3 others who keep turning after light is red!

In my opinion, the ones on the Interstates catching speeders, are simply there to get out of area drivers. When I go thru CR... Locals speed past me.... slow down by cameras, and then go like **** again. Much more dangerous than a continuous (illegal) speed!

The only purpose for any of those devices is revenue generation.

I'm all for the red light cameras. That used to be a real problem here, but I've seen fewer people running the red lights recently. I was baffled by the number of editorials in the paper suggesting these red light cameras were going to cause more accidents due to people actually stopping for a red light and getting rear ended. Hmmm, seems those people that just assume it's okay to speed up to go through a red light may be the source of the problem.

The speed cameras on the interstate do seem more aimed at out of towners, but considering they don't trigger unless the offender is going more than 10 mph over the speed limit, I'm not sure I'm all that opposed to them either. And of course there have been several editorials in the paper from out of towners suggesting they are now going to avoid traveling through Cedar Rapids even if it adds 30 minutes on to their drive because they were ticketed going through town. Hmmm, if they slowed to just over 5 mph over the speed limit they'd save time (versus avoiding CR), avoid a ticket, and be safer.

I'm just waiting for the local to write an editorial complaining that they were too busy sending a text message with screaming kids in their lifted Dodge Ram to notice it was time to slow down for the speed camera and since they pay taxes they don't deserve the ticket.

There has been more than a few PROVEN cases where red light cameras caused more accidents than before they were implemented. Not because people were speeding up to beat a red light, but because people were slamming on their brakes prematurely because they were scared to get tagged, way overestimating the needed stopping distance.

Also, where revenues haven't matched projections, some municipalities have resorted to shortening yellows. Yeah, that's safe. But when you need to have so many infractions to cover the operating costs and costs cut back to the camera manufacturer, these things happen.
