Guys,

A buddy of mine who has a regular Taurus had the accessory belt let go on him. He didn't notice when it let go but did when the car overheated etc. Luckily he was in a parking lot and just parked it up.

Now he's onto to ford as they were supposed to have serviced the car last week and fixed the AC yesterday.

Has this cooked his car? Is it serious damage or just replacing the belt and checking the fluids?

And finally how can I make sure it doesn't happen to me? I think that the accessory belt was changed last year but not sure.

Time to sign up to AAA?

If the car runs like crap after a new belt, then start looking deeper. Check for coolant in the oil and vice versa. Another good place to look would be checking compression.

If you have an MTX, you will know when you lose your water pump belt as you will also lose power-assisted steering. If you lose the alternator belt, you'll know by the battery light (I know because I lose a significant amount of power.

If you have an ATX, you'll loose everything at once. If the car becomes hard to steer, you can check the belt. If the battery light comes on, you can check the belts as well as the other checks one would have with a battery light.

You don't want it to happen to you? CHECK YOUR BELT! Look for unusual wear and cracks. Make sure it is tight, but not too tight. It is pretty simple. It sounds like your friend wasn't paying attention. I've lost my water pump belt and realized I lost steering. I shut the car off shortly after.

Like Jason said, if it runs okay once the new belt is installed, don't sweat it. This is a non-SHO Taurus, right?

If it runs like crap with the new belt...well...something happened.

Chances are if it wasn't run too long overheated it may be okay. If it does run reasonably well once brought back to life, an oil change is probably in order as significant overheating breaks the oil down pretty quickly. This is assuming the engine has been reasonably well-maintained up to now. If it's a beater and it runs, keep going.

Carry a spare belt(s) & tools! An A/C comp can lock up & shred a belt along with a PS pump & WP! So be a BoyScout!

Okay guys... I'll go down to Autozone tomorrow and get two belts. At the next meet someone is going to have to show me how to change them.

According the the V8sho website Autozone has the Gates belt and that's what I have on there now. I'll check them out tomrrow lunchtime.

I need the Gates K060882 21mm*2255mm. I'll ask them for that and get two. One to put on and another a spare.

I didn't know they carried Gates brand, well if they do go for it...!!! :thumb: I just don't usually deal with Auto Zone around here because most locations employ nothing but airheads when it comes to cars/parts......
