Just picked up an A/C pump from greenbird which he threw in free since it needs a clutch, looks a bit rough and I paid too much for the hood!!! :D

It off an '93 ATX, 130? or was it 160K. It was already bypassed, so, apparently there was some sort of event in the A/C systems past.

It spins freely, but if you look into the ports, the edge of the screw has some scratches on it. Kinda looks as if it was spinning while something abrasive like sand or dirt went through the pump.

Can they be rebuilt cheaply? Can I tell if it will work without actually installing it?

Thanks,

Pete

Pete c,

The compressor should take 7 ft lbs, or less, rotating torque to turn it. If it does it is turning FREEly within specification. As to how long it will take before the scratches have an effect, who knows! (The Shadow do).

Yes there is a rebuild kit, but you will pay as much for it as you would a rebuilt compressor, and that includes a new clutch assembly.

You may be able to find a rebuild shop locally. If you are interested I'll dig up a couple of web sites that sell new and rebuilt compressors.

The prices are reasonable, but by the time you add in shipping costs to send in your "core", and S&H costs for the new or rebuilt unit you may be better off buying it locally.

Try the unit you have, if you have a decent clutch assembly. rangerj

The clutch is toast on both the frozen compressor in the car and the used one I got from greenbird.

Anybody got a real cheap good AC clutch out there?
