AC Compressor Good or Bad??? (1994 ATX)

Here is the story. Three years ago when I bought the SHO the compressor clutch was making a lot of racket. After looking at it the front piece of the cluch was moving about 1/4 inch side to side and up and down. I unpluged the clutch wires to keep it from engaging. Now I want my AC back!!! How can you tell if the compressor is good or bad since the AC has never worked?
