I was just wondering if anyone has taken their car to AAMCO transmissions before and what kind of service they had? You can locate them at http://www.aamco.com. I am not planning on having them rebuild my tranny or anything, i just needed a professional opinion on what could be causing the delayed shifting.

thanks

give us some details on your delay. which shifts does it occur at? does it happen only when the car is warm or when its warm *and* cold? have you looked into getting a D4U1 computer for your SHO? maybe we can help you so you wont have to spend your cash.

From what exprience I had with them they suck really bad and I would never go to an AAMCO again! They changed my tranny on my regular taurus and it did not work right so then they had to fix it again and it broke down under warenty, so again they had to fix it and then it finally broke down again right after the warenty expired. They are the worst!

Did everyone with the 93 ATX have problems before 100K? Am I an execption to the rule with 130K on the original and still going? Although I am experiencing minor problems but nothing that won't stop me from putting another 30-40K on it (knock on wood). How is everybody doing that had rebuilds? Better than stock? Anybody racing a ATX?

Sorry no input on the AAMCO but I am curious hear comparisons of the longevity of these trans. Should this be a new topic?

redftsho,

AAMCO has a reputation, and it is all bad.
Several States Attorney Generals have shut down AAMCO franchises State wide due to consumer fraud.

Find a local shop with a reputation for quality work and reasonable prices. Reasonable does not equate to "cheap".

There is a shop in Gorgia that does top quality rebuilds. Do a search for the name and other pertinent information.

If you want to do the job once and do it right, Doug Lewis of Ford Performance Specialists (FPS) does bulletproof ATX rebuilds. It'll cost you ~$2000 and the install but you won't be able to break that tranny. If you can find that money in your tranny budget it really is the right way to go.

Actually it's more of a **** when it switches from 1st to 2nd gear. It only happens when the car is warmed up. The previous owner raced this car all over. I'm not going to spend $2000 on a new tranny when i can just sell this and buy a 95 MTX. My only obstacle is my parents. I'm only 18 and the only way i could sell it was if my dad knew something was wrong. I'm not saying im giving up on this car, im just not forking out that amount of money for something that the previous owner caused.

I suspect if you brought AAMCO a car with a brand new transmission installed in it, they would still tell you it needs to be rebuilt. That's how they make their $$$.

Call around to your local speed shops and see who comes the most highly recommended for performance trannies (don't mention it's a SHO, tell'em you got an ATX Mustang or something). Then call the shops and ask how much for a diagnostic service (a lot will do a basic service free). If you're going to have to have it rebuilt, make sure you ask them if they have experience specifically with SHO trannys.

oh_SHO: i have 105k on my tranny now, no problems at all ::knocks on wood::

redftsho: if youre only having problems when warmed up it sounds like you need your VSS sensor replaced. run your codes and see if it comes up with a VSS failure. get a D4U1 and a new VSS and i bet youll be a happy man. the VSS you can do yourself (painfully, although it can be done), i even have a *new* one i can sell you for cheaper than the stores will sell it to you. pm me if you need to.

My original tranny lasted 'til 128k miles. It wasn't completely gone, just felt it was a good time to get it rebuilt.

Cost me $1700, including a 2-year warranty and a Transgo kit. That was 38k miles ago, and my replacement is still going strong (furiously knocking on wood!).

I'd say learn how to change your tranny fluid yourself, and then do it often.

Amen to that...I'm convinced my ATX is doing fine at 120K miles (Knocking on wood) because the tranny fluid has been changed every ~15K miles!
There are people on this forum with 150K+ miles that have NEVER had the ATX serviced and complain when their ATX fails.
