A couple explanations needed

I've got a few newbie questions here.

First off, is it possible to hook the engine diagnostics up to a laptop or something. I have a code reader, but what I wouldn't pay to have some software on my computer.

Next what is a "catback" system? I'm assuming it has something to do with catalytic converters, but beyond that I'm lost.

If you go under your car and look at the exhaust you will see where the y-pipe attaches to the rest of the exhaust system. Probably at a ****** with springbolts. From that point back to the place to attach the mufflers is the cat back.. sort of a shorthand misnomer of from the cats -} back.

Depends on what you are trying to do. If you are just trying to read the codes that the car's computer is putting out for troubleshooting you don't need a laptop or any software. You can use a code scanner from an automotive store or even just a paper clip. If you are looking to adjust parameters inside the computer you'll need a laptop and some tuning software such as SCTuner. i have a jumper wire that i made up. its just a 3" piece of 16 guage stranded wire with a male spade on each end. it stays in my glovebox, along with my code book.

I purchased a code scanner, but I'm not happy with it. For some reason it gives faulty readings the first two times. When I sit in the car though, I get the correct codes via the cel right away. I still use the scanner as a very expensive paper clip.
