My A/C is acting funny. Sometimes it blows out cold air and at times will blow out hot air. Is there anything I could check before I dive into the clutch. Like maybe fuses or relays. Like I said it works when it wants to. THX

Check the freon level. If it's low, the compressor will cycle on/off.

My '90's A/C has been intermittent lately, too. It works most of the time, but it cuts out occasionally for several minutes at a time. I've already replaced the pressure switch, reshimmed the clutch, and checked system pressures.

I think sdpatt nailed it recently when he suggested a loose connection behind the EATC controller. At his suggestion, I tried tapping the controller or slapping the dash above it, and the A/C comes back immediately every time I do that.

It could be several things. So don't just go buy a clutch. When the ac is blowing hot ie the clutch is not comming on you need to check a few items. First disconnect the (AC on max)cyclic switch's electrical connector and use a paper clip to jump the connector, if the compressor clutch engages than either you need a new cyclic switch or you just need to get it serviced. If not use a multi meter and make sure you have electrical power to one side of this connector. If you have power at the cyclic connector plug the connector back in and check to see if the power is flowing through the switch to the IRCM. Another member has posted a great post with picks on how and which wires to test on the IRCM to check for power entering and leaving the IRCM for the clutch, a simple way to test the power at the clutch is just to unplug its connector and check for voltage. If you have voltage at this point then you can narrow it down to the clutch. Just never assume its a part without trouble shooting unless you've got plenty of cash to throw around and just like to change parts for fun.

Here is the post I mentioned and it was created by NOOK, "I AM the A/C GOD. LOTS of A/C Testing and fix pictures inside".
