The bearing on the A/C pulley is shot. I'm gonna bypass the A/C for now but she wants the A/C back. I searched but didn't find anything to answer my question...

The problem is that the clutch seems to spin freely on the pump shaft so I have no apparent way to hold it steady to remove the nut. So the trusty strap-wrench won't do the trick here. I am guessing that the key on the shaft broke. Any suggestions as to remove the bolt so I can disassemble it?

If it is the bearing in the A/C pulley you can check and see if the bearing is available as a seperate part. If you can find a bearing it is easy to press in and press out with a c-clamp and socket as a press. If your clutch spins freely you may have a broken compressor shaft. If the shaft is broken the compressor is shot. Look for a good used compressor, with A/C clutch assembly or buy a rebuilt compressor with the clutch assembly.

Finding the parts isn't a problem. I have a few parts car sitting here. The problem is that the clutch spins freely from the shaft. So there isn't an apparent way to hold the shaft from spinning so that I can take the nut off.

There is a wrench called a "spanner" that is used to hold the clutch face. See if you can rent one from Auto Zone or borrow one from a service shop.

Thats the problem. I can hold the clutch face with my hand and turn the bolt with the socket. The shaft is NOT secured to the clutch at this point.

The special spanner is available from AutoZone. It holds the clutch face while the nut is turned. There are pins on the spanner that engage into the holes in the clutch that surround the nut.

Space is tight in-vehicle.

Not to sound mean but READ MY POSTS the spanner tool will not help me. The shaft is spinning freely from the clutch. That is my problem. If the clutch was still attatched to the shaft (like it should be) I would have had it appart already. I guess I am just gonna pull the whole pump since nobody can help me.

Actually you have clearly helped yourself <if you read YOUR last post>: If the clutch is spinning independant of the compressor and you suspect the shaft is *****, then it probably is and you have your answer. New compressor.

Just because nobody had any magic pixie dust for you doesn't mean you didn't get any help....

Yeah...looks like your going to have to Pull compressor to check problem. I am not familiar with this compressor since I have not had any problems except no A/C, LOL. Maybe have to drill out top of bolt(if possible without shaft spinning too much) and then pull off clutch and pulley to see problem. Like I said not familiar with compressor but just know thru years of mechanic experience you sometimes have to get medieval and primitive to fix things.
