Just wanted to drop a thanks to this forum for the information. Had to remove the clutch plate from the front of the A/C compressor pulley and couldnt have done it without running back and forth between this forum on the computer and the car sitting outside!
My problem started when the A/C went out; compressor turned when cycled on (or so my assistants said), so I assumed that it was just shot and not working or had lost gas. Fine, I could live without A/C for awhile. Then several months later the power steering pump went out (or I should say the power steering pump pulley went out) which forced me to replace the pump (an arduous tack, I do not wish it upon anyone!). With power steering pump replaced, I was ready to enjoy my SHO again. Actually got it painted. Drove it for a couple of weeks. But then I started noticing a vibration coming from the engine compartment, a hard loud vibration at precisely 3000 rpms in all gears at any speed which led me to think it could be something very serious. I surmised that if I was lucky, it could possibly be an accessory drive so I figured I would remove the belts, one at a time, and start the engine to see if the vibration still existed. Upon starting the car after the removal of the 1st belt (alt-A/C belt), the vibration was gone. So I jiggled the pulleys... alt pulley, ok... A/C pulley...whats this? The whole front plate was very very loose! So I read up and went for it. Rented an A/C clutch tool from autozone to hold the plate while I removed the 12mm nut. Since the clutch plate was so loose, I surmised that the clutch was shot (compressor locked too I believe), and used a huge crowbar to help slide it off. Could not reach, even with some very nice snap ring pliers (bent at the end), the snap ring to remove the pulley. So I just put the cover plate back on minus the clutch plate. Oh, before this, I bought the smaller size belt to try to bypass the compressor pulley, but alas, on my 89 the belt rubbed just a bit. I plan on replacing the compressor soon. Any ideas on where to get one at the best price? Oh, and thanks again!
