My audio system has sound coming from all speakers but it is very weak on the driver's side and seems extra loud from the passenger side. Possible causes?

Could be some wiring that is loosing connectivity. Does it help to move the power balance level from right to left?

Power balance has little effect. When I move it all the way to driver side it is still ultra quiet.

Was considering replacing radio and/or amp.

Driver side speakers can sound lower depending on how sound reaches your ear vs passenger side speakers. Assuming this is not the issue-- it can be speaker driver failure, wiring issue, amp channel issue etc. Radios have been known to fail. I don't recall if this specific issue was frequent. The radio is integrated with the climate control so you would likely have to replace the whole thing if that is the issue. If it is the channel then amp replacement is in order. I went aftermarket with my last GenIII. I got all the features I wanted and better sound but cosmetically it was not a great looking modification.

I replaced 2 times the entire system in mine (my JBL made with cones paper never want to work correctly, ending in reinstalling a MACH 80 from a SLO 97-99, but I kept the JBL sub).

The fronts speakers in doors (JBL and MACH) have a additionnal part on them to reduce high pitches at loud volume IIRC (some kind of resistance) and in the doors humidy attack this sensitive part. Even if all speakers are 6x9, the 2 front ones have a small cylindrical part on them near the magnet (black IIRC).

I resolved the problem by replacing the 2 fronts by 2 from the rear dash whose don't have this fragile part. The sound stay very good with this modification. As I said, you can find spares speaker in high trim Taurus from same years, just be sure to keep ones with the bigger magnet...

Or maybe your speaker could be checked and repaired by someone with knowledge in sound systems. (?)
