96 tranny question

Going to look at a red 96 about 40 miles from me. The owner says that the tranny is acting up. Says somedays it works fine for days, goes thru all the gears no issues, but somedays it acts like its slipping. Also says reverse works all the time. If the tranny is toast wouldnt it slip all the time not here and there. Im thinking maybe something in the electronics is going bad, not sure. He is asking only $800 for it. What do you guys think.

I don't own an automatic; however, you should ask him whether it shudders at an idle...maybe the tc is bad?
