It said the 'pcm has detected in the secondary injection system...etc.'

What is code P0411?

From another post I got 'Probably a bad SAI pump, clogged intake hose for the pump (easy fix) or bad relay.'

The car was going to get sold in less than a week and now this comes up.

Could it be related to the IRMC?

Nope, not related to IRMC. SAI stands for secondary air injection system. It's an air pump that injects air into the exhaust upon startup to heat up the cats. It only runs for a short period of time (60 seconds or something like that). It's not necessary for anything really. Some people have pulled the system and have had the programming removed with a tuner so that they don't get the check engine light.

Could be the DPFE sensor thingy or a clogged tube, or a bad relay, or a bad pump.

I got that code in my 98 Mustang due to clogged cats. This was caused by a massive misfire that i failed to fix in a timely manner. I replaced the DPFE sensor and it did nothing to help the situation. Check your cats first. :)

The car was wrecked and it hasn't been long since it was 'fixed'. Could that pinpoint to something maybe?

Yeah, I am sort of familiar with 'smog pumps.'

More than likely it is the relay on the SAI pump. One way to tell is to see if the pump runs when you first start the car. This will take two people as the pump usually only runs for a 30 seconds or so at idle.

The pump is located under the battery attached to the subframe. The is a short 1" 90 degree hose poking down attached to nothing. This is the SAI intake hose. See if there is any suction on it immediately after the engine starts.

The relay is incorporated into the SAI mounting bracket and is under the actual pump.

Okay I looked at it today. There is little room to see anything, I do not how to see if it is running, the smog pump that is.

I found a couple things that may be on interest. By the starter there was a connection. It was a pink/white wire that ran into a red wire (8 guage maybe?). Anyone have an idea what this is? It was just hanging there not hooked up to anything.

Also, I found a vacuum line also around the smog pump area, but it was maybe a 1/2" diameter and also was probably close to one foot long. It ran along the body of the car towards the battery from underneath. I didn't feel anything sucking on it.

Any ideas?

Thanks, you guys are helpful:)

If the hose is running along on top of the drivers side tranny mount that is the SAI line that goes from the pump to the regulator at the drivers side of the rear head.

Then the plug for the SAI pump has 2 large wires but also
two smaller ones. It is a 4 wire connector.

The wire colors are white for pump power, 2 black for both relay and pump ground and a white/orange for relay switching signal.

The mechanic said the pump is bad, any ideas on what to replace it with? Is it just a Sho part? Or can a 96 Taurus (regular) pump work?

Okay so a 96 Ford Taurus (regular version) pump will bolt right in with no problems and no modifications, a direct replacement? Why is there two different part numbers for them?

Also, does anyone have a part number for the relay for the SAI? Hopefully the dealership will know what I am talking about...Can you get one from a part store?

Also another quick question, instead of spending more money at the dealership for the smog pump, would a regular parts store smog pump work?

Possible part number on the vac. hose?

I've bought the pump on eBay and from used parts places with relay and bracket for around $25.

Are you sure it is the pump? Usually it is the relay that goes out.

That vacuum hose is the drain for the battery tray conveniently located to spew acid all over the subframe if you battery should leak acid.

There are two different part numbers for the regular Taurus and the SHO smog pump on Rock-Auto?

The mechanic said that during the wreck it looked like the battery busted and got acid on the smog pump and melted it, but he said the relay looked to be fine...and that is all I know. But he said the pump has got acid all over it...

The dealership couldn't get me the relay because they needed a part number, they couldn't find it. If I had a part number that would work:)

Better contact Torrie at Fast Parts network.

Do you have an email, webpage, number for me? I take it Torrie will know what relay I am talking about?

"Relay to the smog pump"?

I know I have bought three pumps complete with relays and brackets on eBay or online used parts sales for $25 plus shipping.

How can you tell if the relay is bad? Is it a visual check? Voltage check?

If the pump comes on or if there is voltage on the large wire going to the pump when the relay is triggered.
