So it appears I have the smaller hawk pads designed for the 10.9" rotor, even though they cross reference to the 96-99 SHO (p/n HB 347) and what I really need are the HB416's. I'll order those and let you guys know.

The HB416 is specific to a 2002 taurus - It's what I run on my GL. The pad is slightly deeper and covers a larger footprint on the rotor.

I thought you might have had the wrong ones, but I didn't see a part number on the box to check. What is the PN you have?

I mentioned to "speedysprocket" in a previous thread about the cardone bracket - that he would be best served to purchase pads for a 2002 taurus - they will fit the best and cover the highest percentage of rotor.

what's different about a 2002 taurus brake pad from say a 2001 ford taurus brake pad?
or any other car with an fn74 style bracket for that matter.
the part numbers i have cross reference to:
FORD TAURUS (1995 - 2007)
FORD THUNDERBIRD (1996 - 1997)
LINCOLN CONTINENTAL (1995 - 2002)
LINCOLN MARK VIII (1993 - 1997)
MERCURY COUGAR (1996 - 1997)
MERCURY SABLE (2001 - 2005)

or is the 2002 taurus just one of the many cars with this larger brake pad?

I think you have the wrong pads. The Hawk catalog is jacked up, but it looks like you need PN HB416x.689. The HB347x.689 is going to be smaller to fit the 10.9" rotor.

The 96-99 SHO and Gen 4 SLO use 598 sized pads. The 94-95 SHO and 94-99 SLO use 601 sized pads.

RE:
Yes, the HB416F is the correct pad and should fit anything from 96 to 2007 or whenever they stopped using the 11.6 brakes. (i.e. 2002 is no different). I went to the local autozone and measured up stock pads for a 96 SHO (598). The part # on my new Hawk HPS pads are HB416F but in the details below it says 598, so yes its the right size and fitment. The footprint is the same between the stocker and the hawks. (~2.25" sweep area).

K-Dawg is right. The pad size for the '96 upgrade has been covered before. Here is another topic on the discussion.

Thanks guys. Here are more illustrations for documentation sake. I noticed my hawk 598 pads dont have the center groove, while the smaller 602 pads do. I suppose the more surface area the better, but Im curious if anyone else has noticed this with the hawk HPS 598 pad...

My "HPS" Hawk 598s manufactured in 2004 also came with slightly different packaging. Im just curious because it doesnt actually say "HPS" on the pads like teh 602's do. Probably a chance in model to model but Im again curious if others have noticed the difference in packaging/part # Nomenclature:

Notice the 598 p/n label states "street and fleet performance pad" and the 602s say "performance street pads"
edit: after reading on line it looks like these are legit HPS pads, just old stock from 2004, thats why the packaging and design is slightly different than I was expecting.
