Awhile back I posted a thread after an idiot tow truck driver picked up my SHO by mistake and dragged it from the tail end 30 feet onto a flatbed. anyway I have been having problems with the overdrive being intermittent. Somedays it works and somedays not, all the while pressing the button on the stick to engage it. Yesterday I was crusing down the road at around 75 and the overdrive disengaged while my foot was temporarally off the pedal to slow down and it hit hard but didnt do any damage. Im now afraid to drive at highway speeds till I get it resolved. The previous owner said the was a short in the switch and should be replaced. I think it's alittle more then that.

Any ideas?????

Another question, how do you apply an image when you post a message????

How many miles are on your SHO? You need to make sure the switch is not an issue before determining whether or not it is the transimission itself at fault. You need to remove the center colum to get full access to the switch wiring. The VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) could be a culprit also. Does your cruise control work dependably? You could also be looking at tranny rebuild time. How does it shift?

SHOtimer,

It has 87k on it and shifts hard into 2nd but only after starting the engine and its first shift into 2nd. Does that make sense? all this started after it was pulled in reverse while in park by a towtruck driver. and by the way I am taking them to court cause they claim it shouldnt have damaged the transmission. I will most likely take it in to a shop and wait for the legal wheels to start turning to see if I can be re-imbursed for the damages since I dont have an area to perform that type of repair myself.

Dragging the car in park as long as the parking pawl inside the trans hasn't broken...you would know b/c you would no longer have park, doesn't have anything to do with O/D. I would diagnose the wiring going to the switch as it likes to abrade itself when the shifter is placed into "1st".

As I said along with Slo-Sho you need to make sure the switch is out of the question before you can start diagnosing a true transmission problem. The hard shift into second on the first shift makes perfect sense to me - I have found very few understand it. I know exactly what you are talking about because my SHO did it from the day I got it with 123k on it, only the first shift right after you start it. Sometimes worse than others. My tranny finally crapped out around 140k and I had it rebuilt. Hasn't done the hard first shift since then. Your tranny might have 5k left on it or 50k left on it, but that is one of the signs that it is going to need some attention. When was the last time you had the tranny fluid changed? I would also look into getting a large aftermarket transmission cooler to help extend its life especially since you live in such a hot climate.

Opinion noted about the cooler I took a wire brush to it this morning cause it was covered with desert flood mud and probly wasnt effective as a cooling component anyway. I am going to take your advise and get a bigger one and try to find a better location for better cooling since it looks like it doesnt get much air in its currant postion. that will be next weekends project and will post the results next week. thx to you guys for your advise and I was just excepted today into the SOcalsho club since they are the closest to Las Vegas I will be attending there next meet later this month but will still come here cause you guys are great and full of info.

I'm having (tranny?) trouble as well. Hard shift in first, and now at 80 km overdrive(?) is wonky! RPM's go from 3k to 1.5k then evens out to normal at 100km down the highway. Could be this switch you are talking about? I have scheduled the transmission flush, but will I do damage getting it there?

I have been running mine this way for 2 months now. I just keep a watch on the OD light and press the button which is intermittent. So far no damage has occured. Im going to pull the center console out and run new wire if needed and hopfully that will do the trick.
