Hey, I'm new to the forum, I have a question. Is there any way to tell without looking as to which kind of tranny i have, cable or rod shift? I've got a 95 mtx, w/ a 3.0L. I looks like there is a big price difference between the two. I plan on fixing it myself. For the past two weeks about, i've been hearing a metallic rubbing noise whenever i applied pressure to the clutch pedal. It wasn't real loud, but it was noticeble. Then friday i was on the highway, i took the car out of gear, released the clutch, and heard an awful metallic noise ( ching ching ching type of sound) it stopped, after a few seconds, and the car went back into gear with no problem.Well, later on that night, i was on my way home, got off my exit, put the car in nuetral again, heard the noise, then my car satrted to slow down, and the engine died. i rolled ff the exit to a side street. pushed the clutch in, the car started, was still in Neutral, let off the clutch and it died. tried to go forward in first, would not move, smelled clutch. The car rolls in neutral if the car is not running, and it rolls when the clutch is pushed in, it just won't run in neutral, or move at all when in gear. So does this in fact sound like a tranny problem? Or could it be a bad TO bearing or something? Any help would be appreciated.

its a rod shifter, i think it was midway through 1991 when ford junked the cable idea, but dont quote me on it. As for your stalling problem im not sure what it is, does it grind when you shift gears? when my synchronizer went in my tranny it would grind as it was put into gear but i dont think thats your problem. More expeirenced people here will give you far better advice, good luck!!

ya, it doesn't grind at all, and i have had occasional problems getting it into first, and even second sometimes. it's gotta be a bad tranny, now that i think of it, i thought i saw some dripping from the tranny area, and the back of my car and trunk looked like it had oil spots on it, i thought it might have been from the road. I also heard a high pitched whine while i accelerated, just before it died, oh man i think i'm screwed.

oh man, sounds like quite a problem.Try to pinpoint the leaking fluid from the tranny area, that will make the problem easier to figure out. Im no tranny expert but it kinda sounds like a blown differental. Loud noise from tranny, fluid leaking, dosnt work anymore...eekkk.If that is the case your gonna be needing a new tranny.Hopefully im wrong.....

You could have a leak in one of the tranny seals in which case the high pitched whining could be the bearings. Be aware also though that when the rack leaks it can drip in similar areas which could fool you into thinking it's the tranny......and vice versa I might add.

First thing to do is to check your tranny fluid. Unscrew the fill plug and stick your finger in there. You should feel the fluid just inside the fill plug. If not, you're low.

You might also consider checking the level of your power steering fluid to verify that it is not the culprit of the fluid.
