Hi,

I have a 94 SHO I bought used somewhat recently. The prior owner took incredibly good care of the car and has even stopped by a few times after the sale to check in so I am certain this car was maintained extremely well.

The issue is that recently oil consumtion has gone up alot (and back down again) and is perplexing. The car has all its power, shows no signs of burning oil (pipes are clean with no trace of oil usage). Oil Consumption goes up and down anywhere from .5 qt every 250 to 700 miles and started perhaps 2 months after I got it. Prior owner says car never consumed oil and I beleive him.

I am told perhaps this could be a PCV/intake venting issue? Anyone have advice on how to troubleshoot this issue?

Thanks

Kirk

IIRC even .5 qt of oil lost every 700 miles is too much. At .5qt per 700 mi you'd be losing over 2qts. every 3000 miles, and that's ALOT of oil loss. Check the common leak areas for leakage, camshaft seals, front main seal, rear main seal area, low oil sensor area, oil pressure sensor area. Does the car smoke out the tail pipes while running? The car could be consuming oil if it's leaking past the valve seals.

my 92 uses a quart every 1000-1500 miles. and it runs mint. you can buy a quart on sale for about $1.50. thats an expense of $3.00 between oil changes. live with it. some engines just use oil. is it worth trying to fix a $3.00 problem? look at the big picture.

There is absolutely no sign of smoke or oil being consumed from looking at the exhaust. soot is dry and flaky. the up/down consumption is what gets me and the car has the same power. I am told the intake/PVC/ system can cause this...oh boy, this is weird.

thanks

Pete,

yes agreed, its a small price to pay. I amjust curious as to what the issue is, mainly to see if its a problem that willworsen and/or cause potential catastrophic events down the road.

I want to keep this car as it is in such fine shape inside/out and overall mechanically. At some point I suppose I'll pull the engine and rebuild it.

cheers

If you plan on pulling out that 3.0 and rebuilding it, I would suggest that you think about swapping in a 3.2L motor. You could get the motor before hand and slowly prep it with all new seals or whatever you want to do to it. And when you are ready to do the swap it'll be ready to go.

I'm experiencing the same thing right now. I wondered if it could be the PCV too. Does anyone have any thoughts on a PCV issue? I think I will be pulling my engine and rebuilding it.

You guys are funny.

Good luck finding all those parts for those "rebuilds"....

Ford discontinues more parts than they continue.
