I have a 94 ATX, when it's around 70 degrees outside my SHO won't shift into OD. When the air temperature warms up slightly it shifts fine. Would this be a transmission problem or a bad torque converter? Also the OD button has been disconected or has quit working. This car was purchased a few months ago, and I'm still trying to learn everything. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The car has to be warmed up for it to kick into OD. The tranny fluid has to reach X temperature I believe in order for the OD to lock in.

When its cooler out, it obviously take longer.

Does it shift in OD when warm?

NiNeTy Fo SHO - After driving a while, it will eventually shift into OD. As you drive, you can watch the RPM's slowly dropping, until it finally is in OD.

I notice when I drove my red SHO, it would normally run with the temp at the L in normal. The white run usually runs at the R in normal. On cold mornings (30-40 deg) driving to work it would take a decent amount of time longer for the red one to kick into OD. When it got really cold out 5 or so. It would take a really long time for it to kick in.

One way I have found to check it. Drive for a bit (not totally warmed up), shut off the car, restart it, and then if it kicks right into OD, the tranny fluid was probably just cold.

I think what you are feeling is that car will not get lock up. If you count the shifts, I bet you get four. Fourth gear is overdrive. There is a sensor in the transmission called a TFT ( transmission fluid temp ) sensor. The way our transmissions work is that once 4th gear is engaged and there is a semi consistant speed that is not too demanding, the torque converter applys a clutch inside. That is called lock up. Lock up gives a nicer ride, better fuel economy, and is when the transmission cools itself most. Without lock up the clutch and fins are slipping inside the torque converter, generating heat. Lock up, lets things cool down.

So, it only makes sense that if you want the transmission to heat up quicker, the easy way to do that quickly is prevent lock up.

I think that is what you are feeling. If in fact it is not getting fourth gear, you have a problem.

Mike,

It does get into fourth gear. 2000rpm at 60mph. Is the TFT sensor easy to replace? I checked the codes over the weekend and I got a bad EGR and another transmission code for some kind of positioning sensor. (can't remember.....it's written down at home)

Thanks man!

I think you mis-understood my post. Maybe it was not clear. If it gets fourth gear, but does not lock up until the transmission is warm, then operation is good. That is how it should work. And for FYI, yes. The TFT sensor sucks.

You still should post your transmission code. You may have other problems.

Mike,

Thanks for clearing that up. (I was confused)

At least I know it is working somewhat OK.

I don't know how far Central Ohio is from Cincinnati ( I assume 1 or 2 hours ) but you can always stop by if you ever need anything. Like a cold beer, or something. I would be nice to see some other SHO folk around here.

Did someone say cold beer?

I never did make it down to see you Mike. With the way my tranny has been acting, I am pretty positive that the tranny is going south. Having you look at it wont help much I dont think. It starting to slip a little, and is starting to hesitate during shifts.

Well, when you decide to get it fixed. Come on down, bring some beer. Ask me the price of a rebuild after we drink the case.

I like Miller Lite.

Sounds Good!!!!

As soon as I find why it just quit running on me, I will get back with you. I was driving along nice and pretty and it just shut off. No sputter nothin. It would turn over but wouldn't start. I had it towed to the shop, and it started fine for them. They didn't have the capabilites to check it out. So I brought it home and checked the codes myself. The codes are written down at home, so I will post them later.

Thanks for all the help!

Mine did the same thing once. Shut off as I turned into my shop. Turned out that I left the crossover tube loose after I did my 60k. Damn thing did not want to run. I laid my hand on the tube and felt it was loose. Tightened up the bolts and the two hose clamps. And all was good. Fired right up.

Good Luck.
And PS, if your mechanic can not pull codes from your car, and you can. What does that say about your choice of mechanic?
