More Shifting Problems! Original clutch/engine w 93k. Generally runs great. I've had hard shift into first and reverse, but it really helped when I got a few shifting tips(quick shift into first, aligning syncro's by shifting into N then 4th before reverse). Also recently changed the MTX fluid with full synthetic(may have to do with new problem). I was able to get an extra 'click out of clutch adj. around the time I changed fluid, and cold and short drive shifting was mutch better. Just drove it to Chicago- It was hot from hwy drive then got caught in traffic and it got harder and harder to shift. eventually had to start from second (still difficult) and felt like transmission was still pushing (Pulling?) car when clutch pedal was on the floor. However, gears were never grinding, it just took all my strength to push into gear. Next morning shifted much better when cold. I'm thinking 1. wrong trans fluid (heating up and thinning causing hard shifts. 2. clutch cable streaching maybe worse when hot? I'll change fluid, any other suggestions? BTW Roger Waters 'the wall' at united center made whole trip worth it.

You need to make sure you're throw out bearing lever arm is being pulled back when the clutch pedal is pushed down. This arm is where the end of the clutch cable connects to, mounted on top of the transmission. If it is not moving much, your clutch quadrant could have a failed spring inside not allowing to maintian tension on the cable. If it is operating, it's time to drop the transmission and replace the clutch.

Does the lever arm only move so far? Ie when clutch pedal is pushed in all the way does the lever move all the way to a stopping point, meaning that if It will still move farhter when clutch is depressed that would indicate the problem? Ive read about the clutch quadrant in other posts, is it the mechanism inside by the clutch pedal, or on the other side of the firewall by the engine? If it needs a clutch that's not all bad as i can make othe 'improvements' while it is out. I'll search other threads for a picture. I appreciate the quick response as I will probably be under it tonight.

If you can move it by hand, you need to drop the transmission to replace the clutch because your pressure plate fingers are broken off or bent in. This will not allow the clutch to disengage when you press the clutch pedal down, resulting in rough shifting and the car to keep pulling in gear when you attempt to shift. You might find others saying this problem can also be from a broken throwout bearing fork or bolt holding the fork in place, however this type of failure is very rare.

The arm should move around 1.5" of travel with the clutch pedal pressed down fully.

The clutch quadrant assembly is at the top of the clutch pedal. You will see the big blue plastic gear with teeth when you crawl under the dash.

Got it. I'll check the amount of travel and Be sure springs ar in place in the quadrant. Car is original so wouldnt be surprised if things are wearing out. Great driver but the shifter has long throws and is sloppy and notchy. Think I will also do the repair to tighten the shifer rod assembly. Thanks again

It does sound like the clutch TOB is on its last legs. One trick to use if you are stopped and it won't go into 1st gear: Turn the car off, slide it into 1st, and then restart the car.

When you say you used synthetic fluid in the MTX, do you mean synthetic ATF e.g. Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF? If so you are fine, excellent product for the MTX
