Ok so my girlfriend took the car to get some gas and as she turned left into the gas station. She told me as she turned she let off the gas and when she pressed the gas again the engine only revved up and the car started rolling backward. Before this had happened the car had absolutely no problem with shifting, slipping or shuttering so to me the car had no prior signs that the transmission would just up and quit. When I went to check the car out the fluid level was fine but the car would not shift into any gear what so ever when shifted where the drive gear would be the speedometer would just up when i revved the engine. After shifting through all the gears i put it back into park and it made a high pitched grinding noise. I don't know if the transmission is electronically controlled or if there is a fuse or relay that could have gone out. The car has around 116,000 miles so i really hope the tranny doesn't need to be rebuilt i have a kid on the way and not a lot of money to spend but if anyone has any idea what has or what could have happened please let me know. Oh i also checked the shift linkage and the cable appears to be connected properly but not sure if it could be readjusted. thanks for reading

Having the speedo move while standing still usually points to a broken axle. The grinding noise is another indicator. Time to get it up on jack stands and take a look! :thumb:

I have a 93ATX with 126k miles and a fresh 60k. Mine was doing the same thing before the 60k. My problem was the CPS. If it has never had a 60k i would just run the codes to see if one pops up that is easy to get too. But i would highly suggest you start thinking about that.It will make a world of difference. But soon after my 60k the tranny started acting up and then it went.So if the tranny is original, i would think about that too.Start with the codes.

Still gotta get under there and look, especially since you recently had that part of the car apart. Maybe one of the ball joints popped out of the knuckle or broke and an axle pulled out of the tranny.

It definitely does not sound like a transmission problem.

Glad you figured it out! :thumb:

FWIW, axles should not just pop out unless something else is out of whack. They should be held very securely between the hub and the transmission. If the axle in question is the one you mention replacing recently, it may not be the correct axle and may become a persistent problem.
