'93 ATX Tranny normal on the highway, but on city streets - tranny drops hard without warning into 2nd, then neutral. A re-build and talks with Ford Oakville - no solution. Are ATX tranny troubles typical of Gen2's ? Or 93's

93 was the first year ATX transmissions in the Gen 2 cars, and they were supposedly weaker than the later years. That being said, NoSlo has over 300K on his original 93 ATX transmission. I have an earlier build 94 ATX that has had two transmissions rebuilds so far. My first rebuild happened around 84K, then second around 146K. They are not the strongest, but if don't abuse them, they can last a long time

Does steering wheel do weird things on long constant radius turns (like off ramps)? If so, your VSS could be needing replacement, and I have experienced that a bad VSS will affect downshift quality.

The '93 ATX is problematic. I am on transmission number 6. I think the best thing I have done was find a builder that knew of the problem areas within the transmission and all the upgraded parts. I have also changed the ECU to the D4U1 from a 1994 and that also seems to be better.
