93 atx problems

My 93 atx was purcheased with a rebuilt transmission. There are only 15k on the transmission since rebuild with paperwork to back it up. It shifts hard and late especially between the 1-2 shift. When i shift manually its smooth. Does anyone have any ideas if theres any easy fix for it. If not, I'll just drive it as is with the hard late shifting....

hows your fluid, i think it would be a good idea to not drive it if possible if its shifting hard..you may run into a more expensive problem if you know what i mean

most likely your VSS went out...mine did the same. check your code, it might show up in there, although i hear from some it doesnt always.

The same thing happened with my 94 RED ATX. It was the VSS on mine so I would put my money on that!

yeah, what is the VSS, Mine shifts slow between 1st and 2nd, also when I put it in first (atx) and kind of feather the throttle it takes a second to catch the gear...does that make sense? maybe a U-joint or something? Hope I'm not jacking the thread...

that sounds about right...... today it was tough to start the car and the speedo and tach didnt want to work. It was difficult to start the car and then with the car iding the tach sat at 0. After driving a while, it came back. Ill check it next time I have some time like this weekend. Thanks for the info......

oh by the way the fluid level's good and what and where exactly is a vss on a sho?

Fix the tach "problem" first.

If the PCM cannot get valid engine RPM data, it cannot properly program ATX shifting.

The VSS is located on the top of the differential housing portion of the case, directly above the opening for the passenger side half-shaft.

It is almost impossible to see and even harder to replace in-vehicle.

I had to pull mine out to reconnect the speedo cable when I reinstalled my ATX. I had both the rack and subframe out and it was still incredibly a PITA. Even with the extra room, it still had to be done by feel.

Pull your codes and see what shows up.

I was just about to post a nearly identical thread. I purchased a used/rebuilt transmission from the classifieds here on the forums that came out of a 95. I am told that, at time of purchase, it had 15k miles on the rebuild which included all new planetaries and a TransGo shift kit.

I've been driving with it installed for about a week now and, while it's a definate imrovement over my old 160k original tranny it certainly doesn't feel like it should. It can't seem to decide how it wants to act. Sometimes it shifts smooth yet firm like I would imagine it should and sometimes it grabs second so hard I think I'm gonna get whiplash. Most of the odd behavior is when I'm lightly accelerating (at or under 2.5k rpm) and it seems to perform best when I let it shift around 3k rpm though even then it's unpredictable as to exactly when it will shift. It seems to perform fairly well when I really get on it though it did stutter going into 2nd at WOT during one of my test runs after having it installed.

Another thing I noticed is that it seems to cruise about 500 rpm lower then the old tranny. On my way home from work I normally cruise right around 70mph. On the old tranny the tach would be right around 3k and with the new tranny it sits right around 2.4-2.5k.

I did a good amount of searching at work today and I'm hoping it's as "easy" a fix as replacing the VSS. About to go out to pull codes and poke around a bit. I'm feeling like an idiot for not having the tranny opened up and checked out before installing it. :banghd:

My 93 ATX i usually around 2500 at 70, But I ave only had it since saturday. Were there gearing options for the ATX's?

Start with running both your KOEO and KOER codes.

Proceed from there.

hard to start no tach

I had this problem recently, hard to start then no tach. drove about a mile then tach would work.

I found out that it was my cam postion sensor. It's a cheep part about $30.00 the only place I found one was at advance auto parts. It's easy to replace it is on the left side of the motor on the front of the valve cover, it's a black disk with a plug.

The sensor tells the computer what plug to fire frist when starting, so when it goes bad the computer fires all the plugs randomly untill the motor starts.

The car threw alot of codes, but no VSS. I think I'll still change the VSS and maybe run fuel injector cleaner.

another interesting thing:this is when you know know your VSS is realy shot! you cant get past 4500 rpms at WOT...its an interesting experience when the secondaries just kick in, and suddenly...shifts. very unexpected.

Aaaaaahhhhhhhh...................The VSS is probably in the most inaccessible spot on the entire car. It takes small hands and it is a job that you will never see the VSS before you get it out since the entire job is by feel only. Do a search to get the specific installation details, and it will be a job you will never forget. I would not consider any replacement part except a genuine Motorcraft since it is so labor intensive.
