Tom,

If I can avoid it, I'd prefer to not cut up the trunk. I was thinking of turning the intake either 90deg and develop a dual TB intake, or turn it 180 and feed the intake from the front of the engine bay.

I'm going to get an accurate sectional outline of the engine bay this weekend. From this I'll be able to overlay an outline for the 3.0L engine connected to my tranny. I'm looking forward to seeing all the work you've done with SHO's. I enjoyed some of your sandrail videos already - looks like fun!

Enjoy!

cut the plenum tube just behind the throtte body
replace with silicone tune to connect both sides
place a ****** on the side of each plenum
install throttle bodies

I want to see the spacer that allows the intake to be rotated 90 and the engine to stay put.

With that said... Lightning: there is a lower intake on this car? If so, I'm missing mine!

Can you say: square peg, square hole? turning the intake 90 deg. will just make it NOT fit... There's no advantage to turning it 90 deg. anyhow...

It would kinda look like a Q45 (Infiniti's V8) setup, IIRC.

You're quite correct - no 90deg rotation. I was confusing the rotation with the design intent to support longitudinal & transverse installs (90 deg difference) - my bad!

I did however get a handle on whats involved in the 914/SHO conversion.

First let me say a big THANK YOU to Tom (Off Road SHO) for allowing me access to his shop to get the necessary dimensions. Tom's been using SHO motors in his rails for years and has amassed a great deal of data and insight into these engines - including turbos & super-chargers.

Here's how it came out. The engine of choice for a longitudinal mount would be the 3.2L used in the automatics. One main reason is that the 3.2 has a single auto-tensioning serpentine belt, whereas the 3.0L has two and require manual adjustment and more space.

Take a look at the final best-fit I can come up with.
Magenta - engine bay and body parts.
Red - 901 Tranny
Green - 24" dia wheel/tire
Blue - engine outline

Here's a few things I have to consider:
  1. The centerline for the crank is just below the seam where the oil pan and block mate. This leaves the stock oil pan in place with no mods and out of harms way.
  2. The 901 transaxle will need to be brought forward and down 1" in each direction. Its likely this will move backward as the adapter plate and clutch may require more depth than I allowed.
  3. The angled part of the trunk will have to be removed and re-aligned up to match the adjacent vertical wall. That way an extra rib can be added to the trunk and it can still be sealed properly, with space for luggage.
  4. The firewall at the seats will have to be modified. I don't mind eliminating this as I was going to do a custom back-pad anyway, and I never have my seat all the way back.
  5. The center section of the forward part of the trunk lid will have to be cut to accommodate the intake & throttle body. The TB can be rotated vertically and air could be fed via a custom ram scoop. I'd even considering adjusting the engine height upward slightly so that the intake manifold can be exposed.
  6. THe only other BIG downer on the whole deal is the weight. Fully dressed, this engine comes in at 500 lbs. That is first hand info, not second hand speculation.

Now I just have to decide . . . :nut:

For a 914 I think that's the big one. The weight will also be a lot higher than it is with the stock motor, even the six banger. While the SHO motor will likely give a fatter torque curve than the flat six, the pk hp won't be much different.

And that doesn't address the weight for the cooling system, either.

The snazz factor is still there, though. It's an interesting project in any case.

For a couple of reasons:
1) I was looking for something more interesting. I did find a twin-turbo Porsche-6 that I really wanted to pursue, but it was located in FL & the seller was not willing to crate it up - wanted local pickup.
2) Since this is a total custom car (already did the restore projects, twice) I'm factoring in HP/$$, and Porsche motors take mucho $$ for HP.
3) V8's are done quite regularly, and produce more HP than what I'm after. I know - did I really say that?

Well I'm COMMITTED . . . or may need to be committed.

I've decided on the 3.2L V6 SHO over the EG33 as it just presents a more interesting conversion, and one less seldom done. Thats why I love 914's in the first place - you just don't see a dozen of them driving down the freeway in the course of a day.

I resolved my air intake approach (in concept anyway), so this is formal declaration of my SHO-914. Once I get the intake details on paper (er CAD) I'll post them for your review/criticism. I'm going to need all the SHO help I can get on this one.

There's a link to my 914 progress thread in an earlier post. I'm still sweating away on body work, but making good progress. I hope to be in primer before the summer is over.

With that choice out of the way, now I get down to some serious planning . . .

OK, just an update for anyone that may be interested . . .

Now that I've figured out how to address the intake I'm going to commit to doing the SHO 3.2 V6. Although I may not end up being the first - I agree with Tom & SHOaz - this will make a very cool 914 conversion.

I like hotrodkid's idea about placing the TB on the side. But even if I leave it at the back, I've come up with an idea for a dual intake system that I think will work well. It would be even better if I can get dual TB's and dual MAF sensors going and the ECU can support them.

Now to find a 3.2 motor locally.

Sort of off topic (but since its my thread - what the hey!)

I finally got my rotisserie done so that I can commence with the flares and some of the under-body work. It's built from two 1000lbs engine stands. I never thought my back would appreciate that I learned to weld.

Going to look at a 3.2L SHO motor tonight. Maybe I'll get lucky.

Nice rotisserie, my dad designed one in AutoCAD Inventor and had the welding students make it.

Thanks for the encouragement. I did get a 3.2L SHO motor from "Off Road SHO". Once I get past the inspection stage and get it cleaned up a little, I'll post some pics. Not like you haven't seen them enough though - right?
