Well, after reading Fred's post on that valve shim. I was wondering if I should check my clearence again soon. I had the 60K service done at 82K. I had talked to the mechanic and he said all of the clearences were within spec. I checked them again at ~90k because I had to replace the damn plug well gasgets. I hust looked at 2 or 3 of them real quick and they were OK but on the loose end of OK. It now has 109K and is in storage. Should I check them again before I drive her again in the spring or will it be OK for a while.

The shim and tappet failure that Fred found was a rare instance. The SHO's valvetrain is a fairly stout piece of machinery and requires only preventative maintenance to keep it running for a long time. The 60,000 mile adjustments are sufficient according to Yamaha and Ford. As long as the gaps were in the allowed range [added later] and you use a quality oil (no Pennzoil or Quaker State) and change it every 3,000 miles, your engine should be fine. The next time you go through all of the effort to get the valve covers off, it makes sense to set the gaps on the nominal setting rather than leave some at the ends of the range.
