Anyone ever convert to an OEM in-dash cd changer?

I was browsing ebay looking for a add-on CD unit for my sho. I came across the OEM Ford 6 disc double din in-dash units that the mustangs were converted to. I was thinking if the Mustangs changed to the in-dash cd changer from the tape and cd units, I could pull it off in a sho since they had the same setup.

Sounds like a good idea if you are keeping the stock stereo sound, and not going aftermarket, but I know the wiring is different, you'd have to get the schematic and splice it in.... Post results on the forum if you do it! :thumb:

What do you mean by getting the "schematic"? I don't know what that is.
Just a write-up of the wiring diagram, as I know the plugs from thhe older ones to n ewer ones, are completely different. (ie the older ones have 2 plugs, one rectangle, and one square, and the newer ones have one rectangular plug... If you can get a write-up of what wire is what, I suppose you could make the n ewer one work by splicing in the respective wires.just my $.02, personally i would go with an aftermarket system.

yea..how much do those ford in-dash changers go for anyways?

get a nice mp3 compatable aftermarket unit and you can fit about 6 cd's (at least) worth of music on an mp3 disc..and you can change folders within your disc faster than a changer could switch a cd :thumb:

and another plus about aftermarket headunits are the upgrade potential..satellite radio, add on changers (if you still want one), and rca's too hook up extra amps later on

if you cut out that peice its larger than a double din.. your gonna have to do some fab work to get it to sit correctly. also the wiring is totally diff different plugs and all..

Its not even worth the time

It can be done. You just need to buy a newer style plug and get out a wire diagram.

anything can be done.. but if your gonna go threw all the work whats the point?
wanna easy way for the wiring? go to best buy get a rev harness for the chnager plug then a reg one for the premium sound.. Wiring in't the issue it seriously isn't worth the time.. The space that bar puts in there you either have to plastic weld it in at the bottom or fiberglass a different bezel.. If your going that indepth its not worth it putting that peice in there....

Ahh... I see your point. If it was an easy swap, I would have put the 6 disc in. I just thought it might look nice. I realize now it will look fudged. I was looking at the ford add on cd player and many of them look kinda iffy on ebay. Some have dirt and dust on them. Many do not have the link cable either. I think I have read that the colors on the mustang cd player and sho cd player are different colors. Is this true? If so, is it worth changing the color? How would I go about doing it?

Yes the newer 6 disc's are flat out green. SHO's lighting is blue on the gen 2's. You cant change the color. I did the swap in my ranger and am very happy with it.

One other thing... I rented an Escape with their 6-disc in-dash unit, and the thing blew chunks man. Volume up & down (while idling, not speed-related), etc.

NOT great sound.

Here's what I just put in my 95 SHO (lighted this way):

C4 1

Nakamichi CD400 CD / CD-R unit. VERY conservative looking deck, none of the 17-yo "bling" dancing faceplates.

I have a Pioneer EQ-6500 half-din unit underneath it, and it's lit green w/ amber buttons as well.

Deck sounds incredible, every RCA in (i-Pod) & pre-out you'd want, 47x4 w/ sub-out, remote, etc.

Picked it up off eBay for $285 delivered.

Other than the green vs blue its not a bad idea if you want a stock appearence. I have the oem MP3 player in my 03 Focus, I just added a 200w amp and upgraded the speakers, sounds great and looks stock.

Stay away from those oem 6 disc indash players. They have alot of problems with them, if it quits you also lose your disc.

I think the 03 Focus MP3 is the best oem Ford Cd player you can get. They go for 100-125 on ebay. 03 is the only year the MP3 was offered.
