5w 30

Ive been reading the posts about the oil debates. My engine as we speak is being rebuilt, and when i get it back im going to use the castrol gtx in it. Better safe than sorry...However the factory called for 5w 30 for the 3.2 ltr SHO engine. I intend to use that weight but i know some people use 10-30...is 5w30 a good weight all year round? Here in PA we have hot summers and cold winters...I know the oil being lighter is good in the winter, and probably what the engine was designed to use but is it too thin for the summer?

Many people use the 5W30 during the colder months, and switch to 10W30 during the hot months.

I'm still trying to recall what type of oil the manual specifies for the supercharger...

I dont have the owners manual, thats why i posted. Ill just keep 5w 30 in it all year if it will be ok.

So, what your saying is that the oils are the same at higher temps. Wouldnt 5w30 be better for when cold then because it would flow better? I had 10-30 in my car before the engine went in for rebuild, when it comes back i want to do things right, and i never fully understood the weights of oil...If the manufacturer recommendation is 5w30 then that should be safe under all driving conditions, and temps, right ?

"SAE 5W-30 is recommended for use at very low temperatures involving cold starting, and for high fuel economy. The majority of auto manufacturers recommend SAE 5W-30 for most of their late model North American vehicles, under all weather conditions."


I guess this paragraph answers my question, i found it on texacos website actually. Sorry for the previous pointless posts...say that 10 times fast, lol

The first # is the oils ability to flow at low temps..5 flows like a 5 weight oil when cold. The second # is how the oil performs at normal temperatures. 30 provides the same protection as straight 30 weight oil. Kinda the simplistic explanation, but the first # needs to be small for winter, second large for summer. Ever try a bottle of 0-30? The stuff flows like water at ZERO!! But it did work in my diesel a few years ago.

That sounds fine and that's why the auto manufacturer just recommendes 5W/30 for year round use. To keep things simple for people who don't want to think about it. However, don't be afraid to just put 10W/30 in there during your oil changes in the summer months.

I run 5w-30 all year. I belive thinner at cold start is is better.

10w30 is ok to use down to 0F. If it gets colder than that use the 5w30 if you want.

I'm using amsoil 10w30 and have so far been impressed. I recently had the valve covers off to check my clearances again. The coating of oil on the cams was a lot more slick and thorough than the mobil 1 synthetic 5w30 I was previously using. I want to shoot myself for using that crap for a few thousand miles. I'm sure to use a filter that has an anti drainback valve. This gives added protection on cold starts

FWIW Mobil 1 5w30 at 9.7 @ 100C on the viscosity (centistrokes) scale is at the low end for 30w oil. Viscocity Chart

Im in south carolina and have used 5-30 year round with zero problems, 180k and superclean engine. It wont matter if you choose 10-30 in the summer, I just would stick to 5-30 in the winter for sure.
