Serious MTX issues

Driving home from the track tonight I was almost home and I went to shift into 5th and it was grinding a little as it went into gear. It wasn't overly difficult to get into 5th it just was grinding doing so. At first I thought it was me not being on the clutch enough, after a few more tires it was definately the gear. It only does it in 5th. THe TO bearing and clutch are new, as is the tranny, it has been recently rebuilt (~4k miles). All the other gears shift great, and 5th usually has too until tonight.

I have recently changed the fluid and I also have an issue with the shifter boss.I'll have to check them two out tomorrow. If they check out OK, and I believe they will, what else would cause grinding of 5th only???

*update* Now I have found I have no reverse either. I went to move the car so I could get it on some jack-stands to check it out and I would not go backwards. Reverse might as well be neutral. All forward gears engage but no reverse at all. Help, What's wrong with my Trany?

My experience with tranny's is limited to late model Camaro's so this is just a quick stab since no one else has answered you.

However, F-body guys see the same symptoms in their Tremec 6-speeds, hard shifting in some gears and no reverse when they bend a shift fork. That would necessitate removal of the tranny and a tear down to replace the fork.

If it was just grinding going into 5th it would sound more like you have a worn synchro. Synchro's may or may not have been part of a tranny rebuild.

I believe it was. But if it were not why would this effect reverse?

IIRC reverse is driven off of the shaft for 5th. I think it is, not 100% on that one though. Without a tranny in front of me it's had to visualize in proper detail :)

Anybody have an idea? There has to be a few tranny experts on here.

After a little prep to dropping the tranny, I noticed a bare hole on the case of my tranny. It seems that my reverse idler gear shaft bolt has managed its way from my tranny. I believe all I need to do is replace it, but isn't there a shift interlock cap and spring that goes into one of those holes around there? Is it the hole for which I am missing the bolt is the question?

I dont believe the spring and ball can come out with the case halves together. is it the real small bolt or the one that holds the shift rails? and yes 5th and reverse are linked.

I would DEFINTELY look into the shifter, especially after doing some hard shifting at the drag strip, you can easily break something on the shifter and cause it to mess up. I just did a Pontiac Grand Am 5 speed that wouldn't want to go into 2nd. He ended up having a stretched cable and a pin on the shifter for the 1-4 gears was busted loose and needed to be welded. The customer said he did a hard 3-2 downshift and was never the same again lmao.

this is why I dislike 5 speed FWD cars, its too easy to booger up the shifter and besides that even when new shifters don't feel proper or connected like a traditional rwd tranny with the shifter on the case.

Its the one that holds the reverse linkage rod in place. No spring and inter-lock on that hole, that goes on the other one I have figures with a little help from our forum manager (thanx again Beth). I replaced it adn will be topping off the fluid, should be A-OK now.
