You could ship it up to Livernois and have them put their built ecoboost and all the other goodies on it. Have a 700whp sleeper.

why not go with the used engine? is it outside the budget range? many choices on car-part.com.

The engine quotes I had got were all right around 3k without the turbos. Factor in the price of that plus turbos plus having someone put it in and it was right around 5k. Putting 5k in a car worth 9k seems like not the best idea.

Or you could see about putting a Coyote V8 with a 6 speed manual in there. That would be unique.

Anyone with a GenI or GenII SHO can remember a time where they put more money into a repair than the car was actually worth.

I don't see it as such a bad deal. New turbos and maybe a water pump refresh brings you right back to a no worry new car feeling.

If your original engine only has 84K, I would rebuild whatever is wrong with your timing system and put it on the market to defray some of these costs. Maybe sell it to your dealership since they put such high value on them !

I'd like the dealer to give me a better idea of exactly why the engine is scrapped. I'm having a hard time trying to understand how a bad turbo= stretched chain. Also did the valves hit the pistons? If it's toast, it's toast and with 90k miles almost, a donor engine may not be a bad option if you plan to keep the car. I'd just like to be sure it's done before I gave up on it. Did they pull a head or drop the pan?

Sounds like a standard problem with SHO's for 2010 to 2012 at least with higher mileage. Ford under engineered the timing chain. I just dropped over $3,000 to put in a new timing chain and camshaft sensor. Last Ford I will buy. Ford was no help and in fact the dealer said parts were on back order!

Sorry to read this about your SHO!
Mine has had the startup rattle for 45k miles now. (Fingers crossed, now at 105k miles)
My oil changes were Ford blend by the dealer for first 55k, and since then has been on Amsoil Premium.

(FWIW - My wife had a 3.5 Nissan with 23k miles and the timing chain guides went, under warranty and two weeks later she got it back.)

That's the truth.
Performance cars or cars driven as such seem like fun until this stuff happens. Then you see the value in a high quality boring ride.
There is no dealership that will give you anything for the trade. It's going to auction as is and will go for little money back to them. Someone will fix it, and sell it or drive it. Unless you turn it into a lawn ornament.
One tip if money is even a slight issue, don't roll negative equity into another performance car that will likely break something expensive down the road. There is no win for you financially here. You need a plan that bleeds the least.

Maybe I am crazy here, but if you are going to lose $5K on dumping the car or pay $5K for a new motor and turbos, isn't it basically a wash, except in one scenario you end up with a running car with a brand new power plant?
