What up people, im just getting my feet wet with my SHO and i found out my rear passenger wheel bearing is shot, when i drove it around the block it was making noise and today i took off all my wheels and that one wobbled a little. my first question is how hard is it to replace the rear wheel bearings (im gonna do both back ones)?? my second question is: is the SHO motor an interference motor? i know its got a timing belt and junk but a buddy of mine told me not all DOHC timing belt motors are interference (meaning that if the belt breaks, the motors toast i.e. bent valves etc.) so is the SHO motor an interference engine? and my last question is will the front brake rotors come off when i take the calipers off? like will they just slide off? i know these are pretty dumb questions but hey im just learning!! Thanks in advance people!!

Question #1...not sure. Have never done wheel bearings, yet!

Question #2...The SHO engine is a NON-intereference engine. Although I wouldn't reccomend waiting until the timing belt snaps to replace it.

Question #3...Yes. The rotors should come right off. They may be stuck due to rust/corrosion. If so, use a rubber mallet or a shod foot to assist in loosening them.

If you car is an 89, as it says in your signature, then doing wheel bearings for the back is extremely easy... there is an outer bearing and an inner bearing.... much like your older model cars with hub/rotor assemblies....

NON-interference as stated

Rotors might need a nudge wink but they should come off relatively easily

I did a search on wheel bearings earlier today, because I'm working on doing the front passenger side bearing on a friend's 89. FWIW make sure you have the right socket for the rear hub nut. It's a 36mm according to the search I did and the front's are 30mm for sure. :)

He has an 89. For the rear axle nut on those you just use slip joint pliers. For the rear on 90-95 it's 35mm, or 1 3/8".

My First SHO,

Here is some food for thought for you and anybody else with an 89 SHO.

Buy a matched set of bearings and races. Replace the inner and outer seals. Yoou can have the races pressed in, after the old ones are pressed out, by the auto parts store where you get the bearings.

If your bearings are shot, then the races have most likely been scored, or ruined by the heat generated. Check the races by looking for any scratches, wear marks, or discoloration (gray to blue discoloration indicates overheating of the metal, usually from dry bearings).

At the milage you indicate I would replace the bearings and the races (and the seals).

If the bearings are really bad you should get a good look at the spindles for scratches, etc. rangerj

rangerj- the races (where the bearing meets the hub?) were surprisingly perfect if thats what i was looking at. the set of bearings came with the races too. the spindles were ok one side had a few minor defects. just finished them today (took me long enough eh?) did the bad side 2 days ago then removed my silencer yesterday, then did other side today. start her up take her for a short spin and i hear clicking on the side i did first (2 days ago) im like hmmm. park her take wheel back off.......now listen to this tuesday night the night i did the first side, im sleepin in my bed then BOOM i wake up thinking "OH MY GOD did i tighten the caliper bracket????" (the thing that the pads rest on, not the caliper) i had the weirdest feeling that i didnt do it but i forgot about it and fell back to sleep.....fast forward to my clicking problem, BOOM what do ya know? i forgot to tighten the 2 bolts!!!! i was flabergasted LOL. tightend them up, no more clicking. i dont know if you guys get what im tryin to say but to say the least i was totally weirded out! anyways job done and shes ready to roll. thanks guys peace!
